There’s something really special about watching clay slowly become what it’s meant to be.
Almost 50% of our pieces are made through slip casting. For a lot of our artisans, this was something they learned here in the unit over time through trial, patience, and doing it again and again until it felt natural.
It starts with liquid clay being poured into plaster moulds. Then comes the waiting. The mould slowly pulls moisture from the clay while a soft layer begins to form inside. Once it feels ready, the extra slip is poured out, leaving behind a delicate hollow form.
It sounds simple when written down, but knowing exactly when to pour, wait, and stop is what makes all the difference.
Every piece teaches you something.
And honestly, we still find ourselves standing around watching this process every single time.
Hopefully, over the next few posts, we get to introduce you to the people behind all of this who are also the ones in these frames!
