Respected DC Hailakandi,
Greetings of the day. I sincerely hope this message finds you in the best of health and spirits.
With the highest respect, I, Jashim Uddin Barbhuiya, Proprietor of Modern Cane and Bamboo Industry, Algapur, Thimatha (Pin – 788150), humbly place before you a matter very close to my heart and of great importance to our district’s cultural economy.
I have been devoted to the art of cane and bamboo handicrafts since 1987—a journey marked by both challenges and deep passion. Despite many struggles, my love for this craft has kept me moving forward, as I firmly believe that cane and bamboo handicrafts are not merely products but living reflections of our rich culture, heritage, and tradition.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of representing Hailakandi by participating in numerous district- and state-level exhibitions, where my work has been recognized multiple times with first position awards. Most recently, at the district-level exhibition held at Hailakandi Town Hall, I was again honored with the first prize among nearly 50 stalls. These recognitions have always encouraged me to continue working with dedication and humility.
However, despite decades of hard work and achievements, I regret to share that I, along with many other genuine artisans of the district, have received very limited financial or institutional support from the concerned departments. I mention this respectfully—not as a complaint against any individual—but with the humble request for a fair review. While various government schemes and funds are announced for artisans, at the grassroots level many deserving craftsmen unfortunately remain neglected and unsupported. This lack of assistance has limited our ability to bring our craft to the national and international stage, despite its great potential.
To address this gap in a constructive way, I have prepared a detailed project proposal titled:
“Project Proposal for Establishing and Scaling Cane and Bamboo Products Manufacturing Unit.”
I seek your kind guidance and a detailed discussion regarding the same.
This project envisions:
• Introducing modern technology and machinery to enhance production,
• Creating employment opportunities for local youth (both boys and girls),
• Preserving and modernizing traditional craftsmanship,
• Establishing a sales centre in Bengaluru and expanding through online/e-commerce tie-ups, and
• Building sustained branding and market access for Hailakandi’s handicrafts, positioning our district as a leading hub in Assam.
My humble requests to your esteemed office are as follows:
1. Kindly acknowledge and grant me an opportunity for a detailed discussion with you.
2. Kindly depute an officer to visit and verify my unit’s work and capacity.
3. Kindly consider convening a coordination meeting (if feasible) with DIC and the Lead Bank Manager to facilitate PMEGP/credit linkage and guide me through eligibility and documentation.
4. Kindly ensure inclusion in relevant training, exhibitions, and market-linkage programs, so that genuine artisans may receive timely opportunities.
5. Kindly consider designating a nodal contact for handicrafts facilitation, so that communication remains clear and progress can be monitored.
Respected Sir, I humbly seek your intervention, guidance, and support in reviewing this project. With the right financial and institutional backing, I firmly believe this initiative can not only transform my own business but also uplift many artisans of the district, create sustainable livelihoods, and bring Hailakandi into the spotlight at the national level.
