Al-Biruni, a Persian scientist and scholar who, sometime after 1017, moved to India where he wrote an encyclopedic account. He later settled in Ghazna in Afghanistan, where he was supported by the famous Mahmud of Ghazna and other rulers of the Ghaznavid dynasty. Knowing many languages, he produced works in Arabic, on mathematics, astronomy, astrology, geography, physics, medicine, history. Among his scientific achievements were the accurate calculation of latitude and longitude and the description of natural springs through the laws of hydrostatics. His most famous works are "History of India" and "History of Ancient Nations".
