Today, let’s talk about the steps involved in making a Pattachitra Painting. ❤️

In total, there are 24 steps and 64 different types of work involved in creating a complete Pattachitra Painting.

Few of the prominent and most crucial steps are, “Tipanna, Banakaa-Banaki, Rangalekha, Sarukala-Motakala, Topa-Topi, Dhadi-Dhuda, Chhata-Chhati, Paancha Paakhudi, Sankhapota”

Bibhu Bhai says, there used to be 18 types of Paintings in Odisha earlier, but most of them are lost today, and such precious knowledge is also on the decline.

It has to be our collective responsibility to revive this kind of Traditional Knowledge, and support traditional Artists like Bibhu Bhai and his rest of the family. 🤗

This art form originated during 10th -12th century and has been passed from one generation to the other. About two thousand years old, the modern form of the art of Pattachitra originated in Danda Sahi and Raghurajpur and was carried on over the generations. Most Pattachitra artists in the world trace their origin back to this region of Odisha.

What gives Pattachitra an edge over other art forms is the use of natural colours and the ancient method of preparation. Preparing these colours take about a month, while the canvas, unique in itself, takes about a week.
