We're thrilled to introduce Nora McQuaid, the talented designer and maker behind Aileach Moon, whose exquisite fine jewellery is now available on IrishHands.com.
Based in Derry, Nora creates one-off pieces, small collections, and commissioned work using traditional skills and techniques. Self-taught and further honed through an internship in Glasgow and the prestigious Goldsmith's Centre in London, she employs a variety of methods,from gemstone setting and hand-drawn acid etching to Keum Boo, repoussรฉ, and lost wax carving. Each piece is crafted slowly, by hand from scratch, with immense love, care, and attention to detail.
Nora's work is deeply rooted in values of responsible making, transparency, and social sustainability. She carefully chooses materials and methods that reduce harmful impacts, allowing you to make informed choices about the pieces you bring into your life.
Drawing inspiration from the organic textures of our Irish landscape, the magical energy of native rocky places, and the ancient origins of metalworking in Ireland, her collections celebrate our wonderful uniqueness, resilience, and the people and places we hold dear. Bernie's artistic journey began at just 8 years old when she won an art competition in London's Borough of Brent. After a dedicated 38-year career as a mental health nurse, she rediscovered her passion for painting in 2000 as a way to unwind from the stresses of her demanding work.In 2021, Bernie made her dream a reality - taking early retirement to become a professional artist based in beautiful Donegal.

Working primarily in watercolours, oils, encaustic wax, and inks, she creates vivid paintings that capture atmosphere and drama while conveying hope, optimism, and joy.Recently, Bernie has been exploring figures set in the Donegal landscape, drawing inspiration from history and the way lives were once lived.

Her goal is to create uplifting art that connects with viewers on both romantic and spiritual levels.You can find Bernie's original paintings and fine art prints at her home gallery in Ballybofey, and she spends weekends in Gweedore where the stunning landscapes continue to fuel her creativity.
