3 tips in Care – Skills to acquire / work on
1. Patient – A great carer needs to be patient enough to hand each situation that arises calmly, without getting flustered or resentful, making patience a critical skill for any carers. As anyone who’s spent any time with any older person knows, that elderly people can be frustrating. This may be due to seemingly simple tasks taking much longer to complete, frustration, irritability or aggression, and memory lapses can become more frequent.
2. Bright Personality – A great carer should be someone who provides a lift of joy and not a dampener. Many older people suffer with depression or low moods, so as any good carer you must be the sort of person who lights up a room when you enter. A carer with a bright and sunny disposition is more likely to be able to elicit co-operation and soother their clients.
3. Practical – A great carer should be able to handle the sight of bodily fluids and bodily functions with ease and without ever making the person they’re caring for feel ashamed or embarrassed. Carers will often find themselves helping with personal care activities such as bathing.
