What If I told you that whilst writing this my eyes are filling with tears of joy as I relive my favourite moments. What If I told you that our first Bookclub at a We Out Here festival was something so profoundly beautiful that it has created a ripple effect that is still sending shockwaves throughout my entire body. What If I told you that we managed to create a safe space in a room full of people yet to meet one another, a space where we all felt comfortable in sharing intimate stories about ourselves and our shared histories. A space where each person felt seen, held and cared for. Every single person who showed up to the Talks Tent on Saturday morning came with nothing more than themselves and open hearts and I want to say thank you. Thank you for being a part of this thing. Thank you for showing up.

In the short time that we had, we read, recited, laughed, cried, shared, smiled, nodded our heads and listened. And as we wrapped things up, there was this feeling, that we could've gone on for hours. That we were just getting started. When I first started the bookclub all I wanted was a space to talk about books but as time has gone on it has become so much more than that. It has become a place to learn, to listen, to connect and be in communion. The bookclub is this thing. This thing which represents what community can look like when we commit to showing up time and time again and wearing our hearts on our sleeves. Coupla Books is truly the one of the most special things I have had a hand in creating. WE have had a hand in creating and I am so grateful for every single person who has been a part of the journey.

Thank you .lemara for believing in the vision. Thank you .dae
and a big thank you to

We will be experimenting with some different concepts over the next few months, so if you'd like to be the first to hear about the next bookclub sign up to the substack or drop us a DM.

Much love,
Coupla Books

What does it look like to grow old? What does it feel like to know that you have to depend on the ever-diminishing community around you to look after you? How does it feel to just think 'f**k it' and go out and spend your pension on a sports car just because? Like a Mule Bringing Ice-Cream to the sun made for a gorgeous discussion centred around age, community, children, kinship, mental health. It was so nice to speak about things which we don't usually get the space to, to share little parts of ourselves. As short as the book was!

Congratulations to & for winning two tickets to this year's festival!

Coupla Books X WOH Reading Announcement! 📚

The moment you've all been waiting for has finally arrived! Drums roll 🥁

We are excited to announce that we will be reading Caleb Nelson's 'Small Worlds' for the WOH X Coupla Books link up! Young, from South, obsessed with music, living and loving life, not without its fair share of familial trauma, ups and downs and peaks and troughs.

Sound familiar? Small Worlds is relatable tale that weaves in so many facets of our everyday lives it's definitely going to spark more than a few conversations.

Salon discussion topics (not exhaustive):
⭐ Parent/child relationships
⭐ The importance of music in our lives
⭐ First loves and second loves and maybe thirds

We can't wait to see all of your beautiful faces and we look forward to welcoming everybody into the space for an hour of sharing, learning and listening! 😊

Let's get reading 📚

July's read! Sarah Ladipo Manyika's 'Like a Mule Bringing Ice Cream to the Sun' live from the sunny sands of Brixton beach - a perfect read for those summer evenings and warm breezes. A title that never fails to spark people's curiosity 🌄

Shards of that spectacular fluorescent hew are raining through our south facing windows. The narrow pavements of Shoreditch are packed with sunglasses and pints, and chinos and sock-less, ankle bearing legs. Summer is upon us - a day we never thought would come.

We're a very simple species.. all we need is a bit of sun. And books, sun and books. That's all we need. And maybe some fertile soil and music, and tasty recipes passed down from our elders.

Resident early-bird is the first to arrive and not long after we are met by chef & owner Camila of . We unload her car with a level of care only afforded to new-borns and as the Palm oil stained plastic containers pile up on the worktops everybody slowly starts to arrive. Scanning, sniffing, anticipating. Our monthly ritual has begun. The frantic rustling of the paper bags accompanied by the eagle eyes of as & dish out their precious sustenance. The smell of sweet peppers and onions has made it's way to my olfactory bulb and my mouth involuntarily begins to salivate. I feel like Homer Simpson. takes the first fork-full and I watch him, taking in the minute changes in his facial expression as his jaws chomps down on his plate of MOQUECA DE CAMARÃO. (I had to capitalise just so you know how serious this meal was). He glances over at me, his eyes glazed over like he has just reached the end of the rainbow. 'Nah this is mad, it tastes like Brasil, or maybe even better.'

by Camila was honestly one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. My MOQUECA DE PEIXE (had to do it again) a seafood casserole with creamy coconut sauce, organic coriander fresh tomatoes, onions, peppers and palm oil was seriously a thing of beauty and even as I'm writing this i'm getting flashbacks. The Feijão fradinho Black eyed peas seasoned with o cashew nuts ,peanuts , coconut and palm oil smoked prawns nearly made me cry. Having the opportunity to taste Camila's mother's recipes was an absolute honour and if you get the opportunity to head down to one of her many pop-ups take it!

There's an energy buzzing through the air like static as it battles to live amongst the rich soundscape. Drums, nylon strings, birds song, chanting, feet. Tapping and turning and gliding. Kids are dancing on the streets, chasing one another as the sun puffs out it's chest with its orange splendour. Beating off the asphalt like hands beating drums. The night of Jare is upon the village of Agua Negra and the Encantados are dressed in colourful singlets and costumes. Spirits are being summoned, channelling lost ones and telling futures.

But there is something much darker festering in plane sight and as sisters Bibiana and Belonísia traverse through the backlands of the North East, a landscape heavily littered by plantations which seek to dress up the past horrors of slavery, repackage it and sell it back to the residents of Bahia, the glaring injustices of this system of subjugation are made shockingly clear. The land they cultivate, water and listen to. The very land that feeds them is not theirs. And nor are the plots of lands that their mud houses are built on. They are not paid a wage and their overseers reap all of the benefits of their blood, sweat and tears. However, Crooked Plow is not a single dimension story and it is through Itamar's colourful prose that the rich lives of Agua Negras residents comes to life. Bound by family, community and spirituality there is something startling beautiful about each and every character. Their quests for independence and identity. Their quest to honour their ancestors and themselves.

Itamar's tale educated us on a history not many of us were privy to, and whilst the reality may have seemed very dark, Itamar's ability to give voice to the voiceless allowed room for the story to illuminate the strength and of the delicate but hardy beauty of Agua Negra.
