One of the many highlights coming up for sale at our client Tennants regular specialist coin sale on the 7 August, is this exceptional Scotland, James VII (II of England), Pattern Sixty Shillings 1688, struck in silver by Matthew Young in 1828 by dies originally prepared by Norbert.

One of only 60 minted and in our opinion this ‘practically as struck example’ is the best example to come to market.

Rare Captain Cook Medal that was sold at my clients sale this month is off to a museum.

I am now taking in lots for the August sale of coins and historic medals.

RARE CAPTAIN COOK MEDAL HEADS FOR MUSEUM

A rare 18th century medal issued to commemorate the death of famed explorer James Cook, discovered at a Yorkshire car boot sale, is to become part of an exhibition marking the 300th anniversary of Cook’s birth at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby in 2028.

The Chairman of Trustees for the museum, Richard Kornicki, said “This is a major acquisition for a volunteer-run Museum with no public funding; it will be displayed in the harbourside building where the young James Cook lived as an apprentice as part of a special exhibition to reflect on the legacy of his remarkable life and achievements.”
