Beginning the course - https://plantsandcolour.co.uk/lake-pigment-making-deep-dive I chose to think about Tuesday’s session by painting a little labyrinth. Although my interest is mostly plant pigment I also explore ochres. These colours are all ochre pigment colours from in the Forest of Dean UK.

I’ve spent the last few years learning how to find pigment from plants and making water colour paints. I’ve joined a course to further my understanding of the process and how to find several colours from one plant. The pic is for my own use . It’s a Circle of Colour and the inside circle can be rotated to show me how one shade appears next to other shades. I still have sooo much to learn and try! I am particularly interested in the historical aspect of the course. As I’ve previously described I have loved, and lived, the joy of natural dyes and knowing it was the same for other hundreds of years ago and more. Now I will learned about natural lake pigments and their use in history to now! isles

Using fabrics all coloured using natural dyes. Made a textile stained glass window piece for my sister. I was surprised when putting the coloured pieces together showed such a bright group of colours. I’m thinking of making a flower piece next!

The previous post showed the woad seeds drying in the wind. I wondered if they would ripen before the wind took them. Here you can see that the heavy seed heads found refuge in long grass during the winds. I have been able to retrieve many of the seeds which I hope to use making ink, and also for a special dye process I’m planning with Shetland wool.

Foraging in the dye garden and thanking the plants whilst immersed in the colours of nature. This year I am harvesting dye materials and, since I have retired, I find my mind has space to enjoy the plants in other ways. Here I have rose petals, to begin a drying process for making herbal teas. Along with hawthorn, raspberry snd blackcurrant leaves this harvest is for the teas. I’m using the same basket that holds harvested dye materials woven with willow by Soon it will fill with many leaves, twigs and flowers to colour Shetland wool for my my next knitting project

Just finished this jumper which is made using left over wool after knitting Peerie Pouches. I love working with the colours of naturally dyed Shetland wool. I try think of the plants that gave the different shades and find a sense of well-being as I knit. This pattern is Simple Stripes and designed by Sumi Simola. It can be found on Ravelry. I was inspired over a year ago by a customer , who bought naturally dyed wool to knit a similar jumper.

It is a long while since I last posted as I have struggled to refund my ‘mojo’ with long Covid going on. At last I feel a new energy stirring and my first proper dye experiment for many months was with Weld, from last summer, and iron paste. So a cheerful hello from Shetland as I begin to work with Natural Dyes again.
