Why does a curved chair feel safer than an angular one? It's not just taste - it's neuroaesthetics, and Fredericia's collection is a masterclass in it.

The J39's mix of smooth wood and woven paper cord grounds you through touch alone, a different kind of comfort to the visual cues elsewhere in the collection.

A continuous curved silhouette, like the Swoon Chair's, reads as calming - nothing sharp for the eye to catch on. The sweeping form signals safety to the brain, lowering micro stress.

A wraparound backrest, like the Wegner's Queen Chair, creates a sense of enclosure - what researchers call "prospect and refuge," the same instinct that makes a window seat or a booth feel more comfortable than an open room.

Even repetition plays a part: a row of Plan Bar Stools reads as ordered, not cluttered, because the eye likes a pattern it can predict.

In 1958, Fritz Hansen licensed a new way of making synthetic foam rubber - and called Arne Jacobsen to ask if he had any ideas.

He did. He was designing a hotel in the centre of Copenhagen, and he wanted a chair for the lobby - one that would let a traveller feel comfortable, and unwatched, in a room full of strangers.

So he shaped a shell that wraps around the body, closes the world out, and holds a person the way a room can’t.

Pierre Paulin’s earliest sketches for this piece weren’t of a chair at all - they were clouds. Soft, rounded, weightless forms, drawn long before he worked out how they’d ever hold a shape.

That thinking became the Pacha Lounge Chair - low, generous, unhurried. A piece that asks you to sink into it rather than sit on it.

It’s rare that comfort and design ambition pull in the same direction. Here, they always have.

There's a reason the golden era of design never went out of style.

In the years after the war, a handful of Danish designers set out to make furniture that earned its place in a room rather than just filling it. Function came first. If something looked good too, that was because it worked - not the other way round. It became known as Danish Modern, and it changed how the world thought about everyday furniture.

This was the era that gave Børge Mogensen his J39 and Spanish Chair, Hans J. Wegner his Wishbone Chair, and Arne Jacobsen the Egg and Series 7 -pieces still built exactly as they were then.

Decades later, the appeal hasn't faded. If anything, it's grown. In a world of fast furniture, these are the pieces still being made the same way, by the same hands, to the same standard.

Strong, enduring, timeless design.
