🚸 IT’S CHILD SAFETY WEEK! 🚸
While much of the focus is rightly placed on preventing accidents, it’s easy to overlook the safety of the toys we buy for our children.
With increasing numbers of 3D-printed and crocheted toys appearing at fairs, boot sales, markets and pocket-money toy stalls, many people naturally assume these products are safe. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case, and toy safety can present some of the biggest risks to young children.
Cheaply made or untested toys can look almost identical to safety-certified products, but they may contain choking hazards, create sharp edges if broken, or be made from materials that haven’t been properly assessed for safety.
When you buy a toy displaying the UKCA or CE mark, it means that toy should have undergone testing and assessment against relevant toy safety requirements, including checks for physical safety, flammability and harmful substances.
At Sheppey3D and Isle Crochet by Debbie (both available through The Crafty Collective and at events across Kent throughout the summer), all of our toys carry the UKCA mark and are supported by the required documentation.
This means you can buy with confidence, knowing our products have been assessed against recognised toy safety standards. Better still, you’ll often find our prices are no higher than many untested alternatives.
We don’t test our products simply because regulations require it. We do it because we believe no child should ever be put at unnecessary risk.
Toys should be both fun and safe. So next time you’re tempted by that bright coloured crochet teddy or shiny 3D-printed dragon, take a moment to check for the UKCA mark. Speak to the seller, ask whether they can provide a Declaration of Conformity, and don’t be afraid to ask questions about toy safety testing.
If a seller cannot demonstrate that their toys meet the required safety standards, think carefully before making a purchase—no matter how attractive the price may be.
Let’s put CHILD SAFETY first—not just this week, but every week.
Please share far and wide to help raise awareness and keep children safe. ❤️
