Set in 90’s L.A Stainless by Todd Grimson follows the relationship between archetypical vampire Justine and her human helper, former musician and ex-addict Keith. The narrative around their transition from toxic co-dependence to devoted lovers forms the main thrust of the first part of the novel. As the novel progresses, we meet David, a vampire created and neglected by Justine many years ago, out for revenge. Here we have a truly sadistic creature who brings horror in abundance.
With stylistic comparisons to Brett Easton Ellis and James Ellroy, Todd Grimson has been described as ‘the best horror writer you’ve never heard of’. Hopefully, this re-publication will bring his work to a new audience.
It also comes with a great introduction by Alex Carabine, to be read after the novel as it contains spoilers, for anyone seeking a deeper exploration of the novel, writing style and genre.
Stainless is part of Dead Ink’s Outsider Classics series which seeks to exhume lost literary voices that were ahead of their time, curated specifically for readers who want to stray into the margins and away from the mainstream. We look forward to discovering more from the series.
