It’s the arts trail this weekend. If you’re looking for something to do this bank holiday, do this.

So much going on. There’s the trail, makers fair and various exhibitions and workshops.

In giddy we have a mountain of pastry coming in and we’ll be slinging brews, bakes and hopefully some art. The work from our seeds of change exhibition is still ongoing so pop in for a peek, looking lovely.

Also a special mention that Ellie is stop number 12 at the wash house gardens on the trail, go and say hello. I’m sure Chappie will be paying her a visit.

We don’t have Estela this year, she’s at Taste BD which you should check out. We were originally planning on doing a food and drink pop up of our own but it’s been one of them weeks, maybe next year.

Also, if you do visit us, please be kind to our toilet. It struggles on weekends like this. Be gentle.

SEEDS OF CHANGE - GALLERY

It’s been a little while since we’ve had some space downstairs, so I’m pleased to announce we’ve taken the opportunity to introduce a new exhibition of work we’re titling ‘Seeds of Change’.

Ellie has worked behind the scenes and pulled this together with some brilliant artists, some local and further afield. On display downstairs during normal shop hours.

Seeds of Change brings together seven artists whose work reflects a wide range of emotional and creative responses to climate change. Through painting, printmaking and textiles, the exhibition explores the complexity of our changing environment — from feelings of fear and loss to ideas of regeneration, resilience and hope.

Featuring thoughtful and visually engaging artwork, the exhibition highlights how colour, material, and process can express personal experiences of living through the climate crisis. Each piece offers its own perspective, inviting audiences to consider our relationship with the natural world and the possibilities for a more hopeful future.

Featuring work from:

2026 we’re here. A super late Happy New Year!

First, thanks so much for clearing us out of assorted lovely tat in the run up to Xmas, it’s really appreciated. Our best Xmas yet.

But last year was a weird one. Great at home, but juggling the shop and roastery was hard yards and I’ve come into 2026 feeling burnt out. Life is all about balance isn’t it, and I think often the balance has not been quite right recently.

Over the last year the roastery has doubled in size and there have been some good times at the shop, but that’s gone hand in hand with some of the biggest bill and price rises I’ve seen in the last 8 years.

We try to keep prices affordable in the shop, something for everyone, and also work hard to source items and ranges that are a little bit special and different to what’s otherwise available, and ethically made. And for a bunch of reasons that’s tough. More so when bills go up and our margins are squeezed.

So for the quieter months at the start of this year, we’re having to make a few changes to both give me a bit of time to try and re-balance my life a bit, and also to make sure that things at the shop are a bit more sustainable. January and February are always quiet in this weather so the cafe will be closed Mon - Thurs, open as normal Fri - Sun. You’re welcome to grab a takeout and sit in during the week, and we also want to open up the cafe space to booking for groups, clubs etc, I’ll share more on this soon. But for now, thanks so much for your support, as always, and we’re looking forward to seeing you in the shop 7 days, and cafe Fri-Sun, no big shakes or anything. Just wanted to let you know.

Cheers,
Joel.

Christmas, here we go. My bank has just reminded me it’s here. Greeted with a sad looking balance and a spending graph that reminds me in the last month I’ve spent ‘A F***N TON M8’. *

Easily the scariest part of the year for an independent business, it’s not a period I enjoy to be honest, a lot is wrapped up in it (wahey a pun) and you never know how it will go. Our 8th Christmas this one and we’re going into December really fully stocked.

We got a lot of stuff. Ceramics, Gary lands in tomorrow, Charlotte Manser, a new maker to us Phil Ankers. Locally made candles from Cahm, socks, scarves, art, jewellery, cushions, loads of fancy mags, books, nice deli bits downstairs and coffee! The roastery has sourced some amazing stuff at the minute with new bits coming in this week. You’ll see a lot of our usual Xmas stock in, woollen decorations and wreaths, as well as some new bits, hopefully you’ll find something a little different in store.

Anyway. The place is bursting, buy some of our lovely lovely tat please.

Cheers, Joel & team Giddy.

*Ye, I did this last year, but it’s a lot quicker than waiting for good light and curating a load of photos and editing them all day. It’s also constantly raining. The stock is pretty, you’ll have to come in and see. Enjoy the badly shopped pic of Santa Gary.

Cafe open again…

After a little hiatus over the last few weeks whilst a few of us have been on holiday, pleased to say the cafe is back open again from 10 tomorrow. Brews of our Saltaire blend will be flowing, alongside bakes and mundane chat. Recommended topics of conversation with the team include ‘gosh isn’t it cold’ ‘wow it’s nearly Christmas’ and ‘have you seen the Choral yet?’.

Cheers. Joel & team.

CALL FOR GALLERY SUBMISSIONS - SEEDS OF CHANGE

Some of our walls are looking a little bare downstairs so it feels like as good a time as any to open up for some new art submissions along the theme of climate change and our responses to it, for a new exhibition we’re planning to launch this autumn.

We’re a small space so we don’t have heaps of room but we’d love to hear from you. Ellie has done a fantastic job on the brief for this on Curator Space. To read more and submit work for consideration (closing 27th), please see the link in our Instagram bio - Please don’t direct message with submissions, all the details can be found on Curator Space. Thanks & nice one.

WHAT ARE UNESCO COVERING UP - YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS

Right, so it’s exactly 175 years to the day since Saltaire was first founded by Sir Titus Salt. And as you’ll know, the legend goes that the main industry here was Alpaca Wool. Cool? Well it’s not true. In fact it couldn’t be further from the truth. Strap in, this might blow your mind.

See, Titus’s first love was coffee. He couldn’t get enough of the stuff. He lived for the bean. He banned alcohol, sure, but do you know why he banned it? It wasn’t because of the temperance movement, it was because of village rule #136 which stated that ‘all should drink coffee, and not a drop of beer should pass thy lips’, or something like that. I dunno.

Anyway, wool wasn’t in the original plan for the village. No, his grand plan was to grow coffee shrubs in the lush rolling hills of the surrounding countryside and irrigate it from the River Aire. What a madlad. Anyway, that didn’t work out, so wool it was. I hope you enjoyed this little known story on the REAL origins of the village.

But to commemorate this, I’d like to introduce our new blend worked up . The Saltaire seasonal blend, fruit and nut forward in the cup, it kills on espresso but works well as filter. It’s now our house bean in the shop and we have a ton of bags on the shelves this weekend. Best bit? The illustration pencil wizard Hollie did for us, I’ve been wanting to work with Hollie for a while and am so pleased with how this came out. It’s a reproduction of an actual archive photo of Titus drinking coffee whilst giggling in his massive mug shaped bath he had specially installed in the mill. I think the Homewares shop sells something similar for like a million quid.

N.B., this may all be complete s**t, it’d be neat tho. We do however have this sick new blend in. Buy a bag.

COSTA DEL SALTAIRE

HUH HUH HUH. How annoying is that phrase, nearly as bad as another favourite of mine, scorchio.

Anyway.

It’s only taken 12 months, but we have some new tables and chairs in the yard, and if it’s extra sunny we’ll pull tables from inside out.

Ellie has also worked some magic and sorted some pots and plants, it’s actually pretty damn neat out there now. I’ve shifted bins as well. Lovely stuff. A proper little sun trap in the afternoon. We’ve also got some new drinks on the menu, iced tea, peach, lemon, mint.

If I get my arse in gear I’ll sort an awning out as well… At my current rate that’ll be ready for summer ’27. Nice one. Can’t wait for Autumn. Joel.

We’re hiring! Weekend cover needed, Saturdays and some Sundays with potential for odd weekdays to cover holiday etc. Hospitality or coffee experience would be great. Email to [email protected] - I’ll be reviewing applicants next week so please don’t worry if you don’t hear back straight away. Nice one.

Wow what a month. Both the longest and shortest I can remember.

At home we had little Aru arrive with us on the first, it’s been just brilliant. Feels like she’s always been here. Lolly and Rosho are bossing it and we managed a sneaky trip away. Personally I’ve not been in any days this month as I’m trying to spend a bit more time at home and also focus on growing the roastery . Probably the same for August.

It’s not all babies though. In giddy we’ve had a load of fun. Everyone has done a fantastic job looking after the place whilst I’ve been away. We’ve had some new products and brands arrive, and the place is actually looking pretty good and full upstairs, most likely because the team has looked after some of this, and not me.

Hopefully it’s a decent August, we’ll be doing a bit of work and a spruce up of the yard (more seating, plants, covering the bins and maybe even an awning!), fingers crossed good weather returns. For coffee we have something really really exciting coming to the shop in the next few weeks, keep em peeled. And some art related excitement to share soon.

I keep getting messages about .bakery ! They were in last Sunday, big day thanks, and we’re going to fix another event with them in September.

Cheers. Joel.
