We saw this question posted elsewhere and thought it an interesting question to ask our customers "Is it time to rethink the river closed season"?

This is one of those subjects that will probably divide opinion, but with the way our summers have been changing, it feels like a discussion worth having.

Traditionally, rivers close for coarse fishing from 15th March to 15th June to protect fish during the spawning period. But does that still make as much sense as it once did?

On rivers like the Wye, some of the winter months can be difficult or virtually unfishable because of high water, poor conditions and limited access to suitable stretches. Then, just as spring arrives and the river can often be in superb condition, the closed season begins.

Fast forward to recent summers and we are increasingly seeing very low water, prolonged heat and high water temperatures. At times like that, you could argue that fish may be under far greater stress from angling pressure than they would be during parts of the traditional closed season.

Stillwaters and canals no longer have a statutory closed season, so should rivers continue to be treated differently?

Would a more flexible system make sense? Perhaps closures based on local spawning conditions, water temperatures or individual rivers rather than one fixed national period?

Or is the traditional closed season still an important safeguard that should be left well alone?

We’re genuinely interested to hear what anglers think.

Keep it, change it, shorten it, move it... or scrap it altogether?

Let us know your thoughts — particularly if you fish the Wye regularly.

For those of you who like to get your bait exactly where you want it, we have these Method Feeders, or as I used to call them back in my day, a catapult in stock.

Ideal for firing pellets, groundbait, boilies and other freebies out to your chosen spot without relying on the old “that looked about right” arm throw.

Also, apparently, really good at sending your mate further up the riverbank, or even on the other side of the river, a Starburst or Mint Humbug. We are not saying you should do this, we are just saying the technology is there.

Strong frame, comfortable handle, red elastic, feeder pouch and a very reasonable £9.00 price tag. Perfect for method feeder fishing, carp fishing, stillwater sessions and anyone who enjoys launching bait with unnecessary levels of confidence.
Available at Wye Valley Tackle Box.

Don’t forget the Wye Valley Tackle Box Catch of the Day feature.

Although, with only ONE submission so far, we’re starting to wonder whether:

A) You lot can’t actually catch any fish.

or

B) This entire feature is complete and utter drivel.

We’re hoping it’s not B - but equally hope that A isn't right either!

The idea really couldn’t be much simpler.

You catch a fish.
You take a photo.
You send it to us.
We share it.

That’s it.

And before anyone gets clever again...

A chip shop cod does not count.
An inflatable fish does not count.
A bath toy does not count.
A suspiciously orange “rare river clownfish” does not count.
And catching a cricket ball does not suddenly make you an angler.

We want to see your actual catches.

River, lake, pool, canal or wherever you’ve been wetting a line. Big fish, little fish, first fish, best fish, accidental fish or the classic “it looked much bigger in real life” fish.

Send us the photo along with your name, where you caught it, what you caught and anything else you’re happy for us to share.

Come on... prove us wrong.

Either start catching some fish or we’re binning Catch of the Day and replacing it with Eddie’s Interesting Pebble of the Week.

What are your fishing plans this weekend?

Are you heading away for a few days?
Off to the coast for a spot of sea fishing?
Settling in beside your favourite local pool?
Or perhaps you’re coming into Herefordshire and the Wye Valley to see what you can tempt out?

Wherever you’re going, we want to know — where are you wetting your line this weekend?

And if your weekend plans involve fishing anywhere near us, make sure you’re properly prepared before you head to the bank.

Whether you need bait, tackle, a few last-minute bits you’ve forgotten, or simply want to pop in and pick Eddie’s brains before you go, Wye Valley Tackle Box is here to help get your weekend fishing off to the best possible start.

Pop in, stock up, then get out there and catch something.

Preferably something you can send us for Catch of the Day... because submissions are still looking rather thin on the ground!

Simple, strong and reliable — the Palomar Knot is one of those knots every angler should have in their armoury.

It’s quick to tie, holds exceptionally well and is ideal for attaching hooks, swivels and lures. If you’ve never used one before, this short video shows you exactly how it’s done.

Give it a watch, have a practice and you’ll soon be tying them without even thinking about it.

NEW IN AT WYE VALLEY TACKLE BOX… SAWDUST!

Freshly produced during our shop expansion and available while stocks — and Eddie’s carpentry skills — last.

Perfect for:

• Adding a bit of extra cloud to your groundbait… probably
• Drying your hands before tying knots
• Absorbing that mysterious liquid in the bottom of your bait bucket
• Bedding for particularly pampered maggots
• Sprinkling around your peg to make it look like you’ve been doing something technical
• Telling your mates it’s a “secret woodland attractor”

100% locally produced.
Zero proven fish-attracting properties.
Beautiful woody aroma.

We could throw it away… but apparently fishermen will buy anything if you tell them it might catch a carp.

Pop in and ask Eddie about our Expansion Grade Sawdust.

No sensible offers refused.

Bad news… we’ve run out of room.

After just 10 weeks of trading, the situation has become impossible.

Thanks to your excessive purchasing and Eddie’s relentless over-ordering, we’ve filled the place far quicker than anyone expected. Shelves, corners, gaps, probably a few places stock shouldn’t even be.

So, with no other option left…

we’re being forced to expand.

Construction is already well underway as Wye Valley Tackle Box grows to make room for even more tackle, bait, gear and, presumably, whatever Eddie has already ordered next.

In all seriousness, it’s a great problem to have, and we’re hugely grateful for all the support so far. Every visit, purchase and recommendation over these first 10 weeks has helped make this possible.

So thank you… and please try to show a little restraint in future.

Because Eddie certainly won’t.

Is there anything better?

Quiet water.
The whole day ahead of you.
And a fishing float gently bobbing away… will it disappear?
It's all part of the journey.

Sometimes, the simplest moments are the best.

Pop in and see us for bait, tackle, advice and everything you need for your next session.
