A country table that earns its place in the room.

This late 19th century English pine cricket table, circa 1880–1900, shows why such a simple vernacular form has remained relevant for generations.

Its broad circular two-plank top sits above three splayed, faceted legs and a substantial triangular under-tier. Look more closely and the simplicity becomes deceptive: traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon joints secure the frame, while the under-tier boards are individually fettled around the angled legs. Even the unusual leg profile β€” V-shaped to the front with a softened chamfered rear β€” reveals another layer of considered craftsmanship.

At 79 cm diameter and 71 cm high, its proportions are particularly useful. Here, alongside an antique chair and stool, the scale becomes clear: substantial enough to work as an intimate supper or dining table for two, yet compact enough for a kitchen, sitting room or smaller interior.

That combination of mellow pine, honest construction and uncomplicated geometry allows an English country cricket table to sit just as naturally among contemporary furnishings as it does alongside older furniture.

πŸ“Œ Save this as inspiration for using smaller antique tables where flexibility, character and everyday function matter.

Look closely. The construction tells the story.

At first glance, this is a simple late 19th century pine cricket table, circa 1880–1900. Look beneath the top, however, and the ingenuity of traditional English country furniture begins to reveal itself.

Three splayed legs support the circular two-plank pine top, each worked to an unusual faceted profile with a pronounced V-shaped front and softened chamfered rear. Paired hardwood pegs secure the traditional frame, while the three-board triangular under-tier has been individually fettled around the angled legs β€” practical craftsmanship where every component has a purpose.

The triangle repeats throughout the structure, creating strength and stability without making the table appear heavy.

At 79 cm diameter and 71 cm high, it is also surprisingly versatile: a characterful occasional or centre table, or an intimate supper table for two in both period and contemporary interiors.

πŸ“Œ Save this close-up as a reference for the construction details worth looking for in an antique cricket table.

Some runners decorate a hallway. Others completely change how you read the space.

At almost four metres long, this Antique North-West Persian Village Hall Runner, circa 1930–1950, has the scale to reveal its design as it was intended β€” not as a single motif, but as a sequence unfolding along its length.

Associated with the Karaja weaving tradition of the wider Heriz district, the hand-knotted wool field is organised around a succession of strongly drawn geometric medallions. Deep indigo provides the structure, while coral, terracotta, warm ivory, olive green, camel, ochre and pale blue introduce a surprisingly gentle rhythm of colour.

The full-length view also reveals something close-up photographs cannot: proportion. At 396 Γ— 84 cm, the narrow format draws the eye forward, while the changing medallions and small scattered geometric motifs continually interrupt the symmetry. That slight irregularity is part of the character of village weaving β€” evidence of an individual hand rather than mechanical repetition.

It is a remarkably adaptable textile. Against old floorboards and period architecture it feels entirely at home, yet the strong geometry and softened palette would read just as convincingly in a restrained contemporary interior.

πŸ“Œ Save this for hallway inspiration or as a reference for North-West Persian village weaving.

A familiar Victorian form β€” until you look at the column.

This late Victorian mahogany tilt-top occasional table, dating to circa 1890–1910, takes the traditional English tripod table and gives it a rather unexpected architectural detail.

The oval top and carved cabriole tripod base are elegant in themselves, but it is the extraordinary open reed column that really sets the table apart. Slender carved mahogany elements run down the central shaft before opening out into a bulbous, almost cage-like form above the base. They are decorative rather than structural, surrounding a solid central support and creating a wonderful interplay of light, shadow and negative space.

It is an inventive late 19th-century interpretation of a much earlier Georgian furniture form. The original brass snap catch allows the oval top to tilt vertically when required β€” practical historically, but also revealing the construction underneath.

At 61 cm wide, its proportions make it particularly useful beside an armchair or sofa as a wine, lamp or occasional table. In a contemporary interior, that sculptural column gives it enough presence to stand almost as an object in its own right.

πŸ“Œ Save this one for the column detail β€” it is a fascinating variation on the traditional tripod table.

Colours

A beautifully balanced North-West Persian runner, woven across a warm ivory ground with fourteen hooked lozenge medallions that unfold in a gentle visual rhythm along its length. Each medallion is subtly varied in colour and internal drawing, while soft terracotta reds, muted blues, celadon greens, ochres and carefully placed touches of deep indigo create an unusually calm and harmonious composition. Rather than repeating mechanically, the slight variations reveal the individual judgement of the village weaver, giving the runner a quiet sense of movement and authenticity.
