For those who have asked to view the planning documents, there’s nothing up there yet, but you should be able to find information about the proposals on the Council’s website, using the planning application reference 2013/1259/F – or contact them by phone or in person.

It is possible that some postcode searches are not returning a complete list of applications. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

What will the new store do for the local economy?

The development of the site with the Next Home, Fashion and Garden Store will result in a significant number of benefits which will enhance the physical environment and boost the local economy.

The proposals provide a substantial investment of over £6m into the local economy and an opportunity to bring forward the early development of part of the site with a scheme which is ready or immediate implementation.

The development will create around 156 jobs in a major PLC company where 75% of staff area aged between 18-25 years old. Next operates a 12 month training programme for anyone under the age of 25 and an apprentice scheme for school leavers.

Additional employment opportunities would be available for local contractors maintaining the store and updating the displays.

The store will result in increased consumer choice and new product ranges. It will allow for the full range of Next clothing and Next bulky Home goods to be displayed in attractive room settings which would not otherwise be possible in the town centre. Given the focus of the new store there will be no harmful impact on Longwater or other existing town centres in the area.

The purpose built Next Home Fashion and Garden store will be one of the first of its kind. The development of an attractive, landmark building using quality materials will significantly enhance the appearance of the site and this high profile location.
