Our biggest thanks to the gentlemen who crossed the ocean to be with us at our Open Cellars Portfolio Tastings last week — Anthony Versochi from our sister company Pius Wines , and Trevor Hogue from Dave Phinney Wines with Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Without their passion and generosity, both events wouldn't have been the same.

Thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions, explored the wines and perhaps even placed an order on the night. It was a truly special couple of evenings.

1 day until our portfolio tasting in London. Taste wines from Idlewild Wines

Growing up hanging out in a winery and amongst the vines Sam Bilbro (founder, managing partner, and winemaker of Idlewild Wines) it seemed inevitable that he would end up making wine himself. Working in the restaurant industry he was exposed to wines from across the globe and it was Italy’s Piedmont region that particularly resonated with him.

Combine this interest in Piedmont with a life in California and you get Idlewild, a journey to pursue Italy’s Piedmont in the elevated hills of Mendocino and Sonoma Counties. Sam’s love of collaboration and sharing is clear in the cooperative winery (shared also by Leo Steen, & Ruth Lewandowski) and the Fox Hill Vineyard that he uses and is owned by Broc Cellars.

2 days until our portfolio tastings! Taste wines from Honig Vineyard & Winery

Honig began in 1964 with the purchase of a 68 acre ranch in Rutherford, that was then planted with Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It wasn’t until 1980 that the Honig family made wine, before then they would sell their grapes to neighbouring wineries, but in honour of Louis Honig (who bought the ranch initially) they made a few hundred cases of Sauvignon Blanc. When it won a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair the family decided to up production, and Honig Vineyard & Winery was born.

Remaining leaders in sustainability across the vineyard and winery, the family and all female winemaking team continue to make exceptional Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

3 days until our portfolio tastings! Taste wines from Hosmer Winery

Nestled along the shores of Cayuga Lake in New York's Finger Lakes region, Hosmer Winery was founded in 1985 by Cameron and Maren Hosmer on a simple principle — great wine starts in the vineyard. Their estate, a fourth-generation family farm, has vines dating back to the 1970s, making it one of the oldest vineyards on Cayuga Lake.

Their Rieslings and Cabernet Franc have helped set the benchmark for these varieties in the region — cool-climate wines made in the European tradition, from a part of the world that most UK wine lovers have yet to fully discover.

Hosmer wines will be poured at both of our Open Cellars Portfolio Tastings — a rare chance to taste Finger Lakes wines in the UK.

4 days until our portfolio tastings! Taste wines from Orin Swift Cellars

Starting in 1996 with Dave Phinney heading to Florence and falling in love with wine, and then founding Orin Swift in 1998 after working the night shifts during the 1997 harvest for Robert Mondavi. By 2000 he had his first big hit, The Prisoner, which was a blend of “a bunch of the good stuff together”.

Finding his calling in blending and experimenting Dave continued to release new wines to international acclaim. From the start his approach has been to find the best fruit from the best vineyards and to not screw it up, and with increased access to better vineyards and more control over the farming practices Orin Swift is only going to continue to improve.

The story begins in 1959, when Rodney Strong — a celebrated American dancer — envisioned Sonoma County as a special place for producing wine. He was the first to craft a single-vineyard Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the first to plant Pinot Noir in Russian River Valley, and the first to produce a Chalk Hill appellation Chardonnay.

Today, led by the Klein family since 1989, Rodney Strong Vineyards is a family of passionate people committed to crafting premium wines across 12 estate vineyards in Sonoma County. They became the first carbon neutral winery in Sonoma County — and were named American Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.

6 days until our portfolio tastings! Taste wines from J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines

When Jerry Lohr began planting on California's Central Coast in the early 1970s, there was little viticultural history and no guarantee it would work. He was one of a handful of pioneers who believed in the region before anyone else did — and he was right.

Today J. Lohr farms over 2,700 acres across Paso Robles, Monterey, and Napa Valley — sustainably farmed, family owned, and still led by Jerry alongside his children Steve, Cynthia, and Lawrence. The winery has been named American Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast, and Jerry himself has been honoured as an American Wine Legend — an award given only six times since 2000.

From bold Paso Robles Cabernet to cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Monterey — this is a portfolio with real range, real history, and real quality.
