With the UK experiencing another spell of heatwave conditions, now is a good time to think about how you store your smoker after use.

We all know a hot smoker can cause damage if not handled carefully, so storing it properly during transit and after use is very important.

Our heavy-duty smoker boxes are a perfect addition to any apiary, allowing you to safely transport your smoker before and after inspections.

Get yours today!

Throwback Thursday!

This week, we’ve been looking back through some old photos from when we moved to our Rand site. These were taken in early 2011 and capture some of the big machinery being moved into our new workshop — a move we took on ourselves!

It was certainly a challenging time, as we were operating two workshops and moving equipment between them, all while keeping production running. It was a huge effort, but we made it happen!

Our MD Paul had planned out the entire workshop move using borrowed Lego mats and figures from his grandson, and it worked a treat! We even made him a little 'fat controller' figure, to go alongside it 😄

It’s great to look back and see just how far we’ve come since those early days here at Rand🐝

Let us know in the comments if you remember this big move happening!

We’re incredibly lucky to share our site here at Rand with so many wonderful members of our local wildlife🌿

These lovely photos were sent to us, showing a handful of dragonflies that were spotted on site, captured beautifully mid-flight! It’s always a joy to see the wildlife that calls Rand home and it is a great reminder of the nature thriving all around us.

The species spotted are...
Image 1. Four Spotted Chaser
Images 2 & 3. Black Tailed Skimmer
Images 4 & 5. Migrant Hawker
Image 6. Ruddy Darter

A big thank you for sharing these fantastic photos with us! 💚🌱

Developed in France, this simple yet effective hive entrance guard is designed to help protect your bees from the threat of the Asian Hornet.

The precisely sized oval openings allow honey bees to move freely in and out of the hive, while the Asian Hornet’s larger wingspan prevents it from gaining access through the guard.

Fitting is simple:
- Use drawing pins to secure the guard in place, ensuring it fully covers the hive entrance.
- The Stop It section hangs down.
- If your hive is on a sloping stand, slot the bottom tabs between the hive floor and the stand for additional support.

When the Asian Hornet threat has passed, the guard can be easily removed and stored for future use.
A simple, practical solution to help give your bees an extra layer of protection when they need it most.

Our Rand Sale and Open Day will be here before you know it!
Keep an eye on our social media for sneak peaks and previews of what to expect this year...

For now, here is a small list of things to expect,

We will have live demos of the equipment you may have seen us showcasing these past few weeks. This will include demos on our newly stocked SG Filling Machine, Hivekeepers Micro Honey Harvester, and TrapX Wasp Traps - there will be plenty of knowledgeable staff around to answer any questions you may have about the products we sell here at Thorne.

Our TWO observation hives will be standing proud for you to see, one at the front of our site which you would have seen in our weekly 'Observabee Update', and our second that is part of our Thorne Museum (also available to explore!).

Save the date! October 10th! 💵

Observabee Update 🐝

The bees seem to be expanding nicely since some of them decided to move on! We can see capped brood in the comb, and we even caught a little waggle dance! 🐝

We have also been keeping a close eye on the temperature inside the hive during these recent peaks in the weather.
