International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021 💜

'Persons with disabilities in the world are among the hardest hit by COVID-19' -

'Since March 2020, every person on earth has been impacted by drastic political, social and economic change as a result of domestic and international responses to COVID-19.

This year, International Day of People with Disabilities should be used to recognise that people who live with disabilities are among the most affected populations amid the COVID pandemic. Where marginalisation, discrimination, vulnerability and exploitation are every day factors for many people, the increased risk of poor outcomes have been magnified with the reduced access to routine health care and rehabilitation services, more pronounced social isolation, poorly tailored public health messaging, inadequately constructed mental health services, and a lack of emergency preparedness for people with special needs.

We call on domestic and international public health officials, political representatives, advocates, supporters, and every citizen in every community, to learn from the experiences of people living with disabilities during this pandemic, and push for more meaningful investments into the socioeconomic building blocks which will reduce the barriers faced by people with disabilities in every community on earth' -

World Arthritis Day 2021

12th October

Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint.

In the UK, more than 10 million people have arthritis or other, similar conditions that affect the joints.

Arthritis affects people of all ages, including children.

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the 2 most common types of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the UK, affecting nearly 9 million people.

It most often develops in people in their mid-40s or older.

It's also more common in women and people with a family history of the condition.

But it can occur at any age as a result of an injury or be associated with other joint-related conditions, such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis initially affects the smooth cartilage lining of the joint. This makes movement more difficult than usual, leading to pain and stiffness.

The most commonly affected joints are those in the: hands, spine, knees and hips

Rheumatoid arthritis:

In the UK, rheumatoid arthritis affects more than 400,000 people.

It often starts when a person is between 40 and 50 years old. Women are 3 times more likely to be affected than men.

In rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune system targets affected joints, which leads to pain and swelling.

This can then spread across the joint, leading to further swelling and a change in the joint's shape. This may cause the bone and cartilage to break down.

People with rheumatoid arthritis can also develop problems with other tissues and organs in their body.

Arthritis is often associated with older people, but it can also affect children. In the UK, about 15,000 children and young people are affected by arthritis. Most types of childhood arthritis are known as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). The main types of JIA are Oligo-articular JIA, Polyarticular JIA (polyarthritis), Systemic onset JIA and Enthesitis-related arthritis.

OCD Awareness Week 2021

10-16th October

"It's not about being tidy, it's about having no control over your negative thoughts. It's about being afraid not doing things a certain way will cause harm." -

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (or more routinely referred to as OCD) is a serious anxiety-related condition where a person experiences frequent intrusive and unwelcome obsessional thoughts, commonly referred to as obsessions.

Obsessions are very distressing and result in a person carrying out repetitive behaviours or rituals in order to prevent a perceived harm and/or worry that preceding obsessions have focused their attention on. Such behaviours include avoidance of people, places or objects and constant reassurance seeking, sometimes the rituals will be internal mental counting, checking of body parts, or blinking, all of these are compulsions.

Compulsions do bring some relief to the distress caused by the obsessions, but that relief is temporary and reoccurs each time a person’s obsessive thought/fear is triggered. Sometimes over time the compulsions can become more of a habit where the original obsessive fear and worry has been forgotten, in this instance compulsions are often completed to enable the individual to feel ‘just right’, the key word being ‘feel’.

OCD presents itself in many guises, and certainly goes far beyond the common perception that OCD is merely a little hand washing, checking light switches or having spotless houses or a characteristic of someone who is a little fastidious. In fact, if a person is suffering with Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder then it will be impacting on some or all aspects of their daily life, sometimes becoming severely distressing leading to some nature of impairment or even disablement for hours at a time, each and every day. It is for this reason and level of impact on a person that makes OCD a disorder.

If you think you have OCD, please do speak to your GP or refer yourself to psychological therapies services. There are also many different helplines such as OCD Action and Mind who are there to help you.

These statistics were found when conducted their Disability Perception Gap report in 2018.⠀

'Our Disability Perception Gap report shines a light on the British public’s attitudes to disabled people. The findings are based on research by the National Centre for Social Research as part of the annual British Social Attitudes Survey.⠀

The research shows that the public is still stereotyping disabled people in all aspects of their daily lives, including how much care disabled people need and how productive they are.⠀

The gap between disabled people and non-disabled people’s impression of negative attitudes has trebled over the last 20 years. 1 in 3 disabled people feel there is still a lot of disability prejudice in Britain today, but only 1 in 5 non-disabled people agree. That's a big difference between the public’s perceptions of disability and disabled people’s experiences.'⠀

Do you think attitudes have changed at all? Or do you think not much has changed? Have you experienced any of these perceptions?⠀
