What a weekend!

Last Saturday I attended the family history show at Burgess Hall, St.Ives. An international genealogy event and being the only medal dealer there I attracted a lot of interest from people seeking family medals. My medal finding service proved popular and I managed to sell some medals too! Lots of people collecting to their family name and some wanting unnamed original WW2 medals to make up a relative’s missing group.

It was a real pleasure to help people with advice and offer specialist knowledge when researching their relatives military past, a really enjoyable day.

Next stop on Sunday I was at Thetford military fair, one of my favourite events in the show calendar. Business was brisk and sales covered a wide collecting theme, from Victorian campaigns right through to modern service medals, I even managed to pick up some items for myself!

Lots of familiar faces and regular customers and some new ones too, so a really worthwhile event for FMP Medals.

I’ll be at Stratford upon Avon fair this weekend so please stop by and say hello, I may have something that interests you.

The Medal Locating Services offered by FMP Medals.

1. Send me as much detail that you have about the medal(s) you are searching for. This information MUST be sent to: [email protected].
2. If the medals have been reported as stolen then you must include the crime reference number.
3. I will undertake searches using various sources and try to locate the medal(s) for you. It may take a long time and ultimately I can’t guarantee I’ll be successful. The details are entered on to my Customers Wants list and stay there, so there is no need to keep checking if I have found them!

NOTE: There is NO CHARGE for my services at this stage.

4. If I locate the Medal(s) I will contact you by email.
5. If you still want the medal(s) then….. You will be charged the current market value ie how much it costs me to buy them plus a fee of £100.00, which equates to just under 3 hours of my research fees + p&p by Royal Mail.
6. OR if you want to deal with the 3rd party yourself, ie you arrange to recover the medals, then you pay my fee of £100 and I will put you in touch with the 3rd party.

To date, I have had 2 re-unites with family medals that have been missing for sometime and 1 medal that was being sort by a collector to complete a group he already owned, so remember I will try and locate any medal you are looking for.

I have tried to be as clear and transparent as possible, but please email me at [email protected] if you have any further questions, wish to take up the service or alternatively want to speak to me in person at any of the medal shows I regularly attend around the UK, I’d be happy to help.

Battle of Arras 1917

I managed to take a tour of the Wellington tunnels at Arras, a must see if you want to understand The Battle of Arras, a major British-led offensive fought between 9 April and 16 May 1917.

The Arras battlefield stretched across northern France, including key locations like:
• Vimy Ridge – Captured by Canadian forces in a famous victory
• Monchy-le-Preux – Scene of intense fighting
• Bullecourt – Heavy Australian casualties

A unique feature of the battlefield was the network of underground tunnels beneath Arras, used by Allied troops to move safely before the attack.

The guided tour takes about 1hr 20 minutes and needs to be booked in advance. It really gives an understanding of the thorough preparation and planning of this major battle, well worth a visit.

A Trip to Bapaume…..

I’m currently undertaking a short trip to Northern France and based myself in the small provincial town of Bapaume, Hauts-de-France, about 25km south of Arras. The area was heavily fought over during WW1, so I have taken the opportunity to visit some of the CWGC cemetery’s, memorials and places of interest relating to the war in this vicinity; for those that have not visited this area before I would urge you to do so.

It is an incredibly thought provoking experience, trying to understand the scale of the losses suffered and the way in which war was fought during this time; it certainly makes one think.

I have posted a few photos of the places I managed to visit, hopefully you’ll find them interesting and may encourage you to visit the area yourself.
