The beautiful kimono worn here by Ono no Komachi, whilst not accurate to the Heian period clothing the famous poetess would have worn, is a beautiful example of the fluidity of motion that typifies depictions of clothing in Japanese art. Much as modern depictions of historical figures often use contemporary beauty standards to make their characters more relatable to modern audiences, Kikukawa Eizan (1787-1867) clothes Ono no Komachi in the style of kimono popular during the Edo Period.

Learn more about the history and culture of the kimono at a new exhibition hosted by at the Japanese Gallery Angel.

During the height of excess at the French court of Versailles, enormous wigs were very much in style. Often extravagantly themed - the most infamous examples being adorned with ornamental boats - such wigs fell out of fashion after the French Revolution, when they became symbolic of the decadence of the ancien regime.

Hakuho Hirano (1879-1957) was an enigmatic painter and woodblock artist. His portrayals of women dressing or arranging their hair feel almost voyeuristic in their intimacy, but the delicate tenderness of his style cannot but be admired.
