The Whisky Exchange currently stocks more than 2,500 whiskies, of which about 1,900 are Single Malt Scotch whiskies, with 200 Bourbons available and the remainder being made up of Blended Scotch, Grain, Irish, Japanese and other whiskies from countries including Wales, South Africa, India, Sweden and Australia. In addition to this there are more than 275 rums, around 200 vodkas, more than 300 Cogn

acs and Armagnacs, 100 gins, 120 Tequilas and more than 400 specialist liqueurs. In all, something in the region of 5,000 products are active on the site and available to order online at any given time, and this number is increasing as we continue to stock the best of the thousands of new products released each year.

High summer is a time of Bacchanalian potential, although to be fair so is Spring, and Harvest, and the darkest winter. Nonetheless, the fruit ripening on the vine and on the bough heralds a whole world of potential, and really there is nothing more beautiful to take to the dappled shade of an orchard with a picnic of delights.

For those of us who aren't blessed with a few spare acres of fruit trees, we can make do with a little Pommeau. Made by adding calvados to fermenting cider, it is a brilliant aperitif bursting with apples. At Cognac Show earlier in the year Guillaume Le Dorner was serving up a Paradise Lost using La Flaguerie 2 Year Old Calvados, La Flaguerie Pommeau de Normandie a splash of Fair Elderflower Liqueur and Verjus.

A story fit for film, Benjamin Baker was a fighter pilot in the Armée de l'air before giving up jets for cognac and the woman he loved.

One of the major bases of the French airforce is located in Cognac and it was here that Benjamin fell in love with both a local girl and the beautiful spirits of the area. He now has the extremely enviable job of driving round the country talking to distillers and trying, and succeeding, to charm them into selling him some parcels of particularly delicious eau-de-vie. This year he's along with the latest of his floral releases - he's also sharing his first, and doubtless delicious, pineau de charentes.

It is fair to say that Haiti, with all its abundance, is also one of the most blighted of islands. Some of that is the geography - it has been rocked by earthquakes and hurricanes. But it is also a very human story, the cruelties of slavery and the debt of emancipation, the failure of government and states, that mean that modern Haiti is one of the poorest and lesser developed countries in the world.

Amid that, there are glimmers of hope and stories of renewal. Clairin, which the rum heads among us cherish, is one of them. Bouvil was a pioneer of distilling and its history and tradition continues to shape the way they do things, providing good jobs for local people, with an admirable transparency to every step of the process.
