GARNET ❤️ January's gemstone
January’s birthstone is garnet. The name comes from the Latin word granatus, which can mean ‘grain’ or ‘pomegranate’ – a reference to the fact that garnet crystals often look like pomegranate seeds. Garnets have been used in jewellery for centuries, going all the way back to the Bronze Age, and have a royal pedigree: worn by pharaohs in Ancient Egypt, they were also a favourite of Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Victoria.
While garnet is a meaningful choice for anyone celebrating a January birthday, its symbolism goes deeper than that. Blood-red garnets are associated with the heart, making them the perfect symbol of enduring love, passion and friendship, as well as strength and creativity. They’re believed to provide protection: King Solomon is among the monarchs who wore garnet jewellery into battle. And garnets have long been believed to have healing properties, such as helping to improve circulation and combat melancholy.
