This week brought something I never expected to feel so proud of, one year (and a few weeks!) since Easthope Studio first opened its doors in Shrewsbury Market. Although I am still yet to give the shop its official name, perhaps Easthope and Friends??

To mark the occasion, we gathered at the Nags Head (my spiritual home) with friends, fellow makers, artists, and some of you who’ve become part of this little journey we’re on.
I’ll confess, I’ve never been one for celebrations where I’m the centre of attention. Birthdays, milestones, anything that puts me in the spotlight tends to make me want to slip away to the back of the room. Swallow me up, swallow me whole.

I’ve never lived what you’d call a conventional life. No marriage, no babies, no following the traditional path, nothing wrong with any of that, it just hasn’t been mine. Instead, I’ve learned that the moments that matter most are often the ones that don’t fit neatly into society’s expectations. The ones we have to create for ourselves, the ones that make us step back and say “this is really happening, christ!”

For now, I’m content right here, in this space we’ve all built together. The next chapter will come when it’s ready. Right now, I’m just grateful to be part of something real, something human, something that reminds us all why we keep creating. And there will be more parties and chances to get together, because actually thats why do we what we do. To feel part of a bigger something, woven together.

Thank you to all who came and celebrated with me this weekend, and sent a nice note, or has even just liked an instagram post in the last 5 years, I really truly could not have done it without you, you’re facilitating my dream!

With big big massive, to the dark side of the moon and back love,
Harriet ###

Selma bracelets - just in time for the sun.

Each glass bead is made by me an is punctuated with vintage pearls and a few vintage beads, it takes about 10 days from start to finish to make each one as each bead is made, cooled, cleaned and inspected.

The Easthope workshops are a slow, considered spaces, a pause from the rush, where you learn, experiment, and leave with something entirely your own. No two pieces ever come out the same (and that’s the point)
Whether it’s your first time working with beads or you already know your way around a pair of pliers, these sessions are about process over perfection. Materials, guidance, and time to play, all held in a small, intimate setting.
Come alone, come with a friend, come curious.
A piece you made yourself always carries more

Glass melt earrings are formed by heating glass until it softens (around 700–800°C), then shaping it while molten, like runny honey. The process stays controlled, but small shifts in heat and timing mean each pair turns out slightly different. Each pair as unique as the wearer. Colour, shape and size all a little, little bit different!

New In! Glass and metal rings

These ones sit on adjustable metal bands, so they’ve got a bit of give in them. You can nudge them a little tighter when your hands are cold, or loosen them off when it’s warmer, they move with you rather than being fixed. The idea was born from a customer who has arthritis, and the solid glass rings just don’t work with flare ups and the days when things are a little more uncomfortable

They’re really nice for stacking too. Two together feels easy and balanced, not too much, just enough.

They’re not replacing the original glass rings, more just an option if you need something a bit more forgiving. It also means one piece can work across lots of different hands and fingers, which feels like a good thing.
Same glass, just a different way of wearing it.

Thank you to my pal Polly for lending me her hands, jewellers don’t tend to have photogenic hands…!

With everything we do as humans, we create waste. It’s unavoidable really, just by breathing and living there’s always something left behind.

I’m very aware of that in the studio, and because of it I end up with buckets of glass. Pieces that are too small to use, bits from failed projects, or from when the kiln’s been set a little too high, too low, too fast, too slow.

Because of that, the minimal waste collection keeps growing and changing. There isn’t really an end point to it. All the shards get scooped up and brought back in. (Minimal waste because zero waste as a concept is impossible!)

That’s the amazing thing about glass, it doesn’t deteriorate when it’s recycled. It keeps its integrity. The colour, the strength, the texture, the feel, it all stays the same.

My one year anniversary in the shop passed by very quietly.
To be honest, I kind of forgot. And when I did remember, I wasn’t really sure how to celebrate it.

So I thought I’d just write down a few things I’m grateful for, or things I’ve learnt.

It’s impossible to do any of this without my family. My sister helped me create the physical vision of the shop, her taste and styling is something I trust completely. My mum has probably done about a thousand lifts and drive-bys at this point, dropping off stock, dropping off Ettie. And sweet Ettie, making necklaces with me, bringing me lunch when I’m wildly busy.

My neighbours in the market have shared the kind of wisdom that only comes with years of doing this. The casual “have you thought about xyz” which, if I’m honest, I hadn’t. The reassurance, the cheerleading. A group of women who are all doing the same thing, and who I now think of as my friends.
And I’ve learnt that the market is actually a really wonderful place, we dont need the Sunday Times to tell us that, we already knew.

The customers who come by every month, sometimes more, and bring their friends and family to see what’s new.
“Omg you’re going to love it here”
“I just know you’ll love the little peas, they’re like the ones you grew last summer” People who genuinely care, who encourage my madness, “defo make seagulls”
Friends will never be your customers - but your customers will become your friends. A collection turned into hours of chatting, an invitation for drinks and the start of a Book Club.

The other makers and artists I’ve stocked in the shop. The realisation that we’re all having the same doubts, the same scary thoughts, more often than we probably admit.

I’ve also learnt that making and running a shop is, quite obviously, a full time job (and then some). And that my collection of silly, slightly uncomfortable shoes just won’t cut it when you’re walking, cycling, and standing all day.

And maybe the biggest one, that living your dream isn’t always dreamy. It’s hard, it’s a slog, it’s relentless at times. But it is so, so much better than being shouted at by men.

So, maybe let’s meet for a pint to celebrate when the sun comes out! TBC
