How many children can say their parents literally own a sweetie shop?
For Nicola and Joe Williamson’s four bairns, that is the dream they are now living after the pair took over much-loved Lerwick institution Universal Stores earlier this month.
“They’ve been offering so many sweeties to their friends already,” Nicola laughed.
It is not just the dream of the youngsters to call Universal Stores their own. For keen florist Nicola, taking over Universal means the world to her.

🌻A PEERIE ANNOUNCEMENT 🍭
Yesterday 31st October 2025 Mike and I retired.
We didn't want a fuss, so very few people knew.
But we thank everyone who have supported us, our customers, many who we now consider friends, our suppliers, and Christine who has been amazing for the last 17 years.
The incredible friends who have come to help at our busiest times, we couldn't have done it without you.
Thank you for all your very kind words,cards and gifts, very humbling.
The shop will be closed for a short while, but watch this space.
We loved our shop, but now is time for our next chapter together.
Many, many thanks again for being the most fabulous people and choosing Universal Stores Lerwick over the last few decades.
