Looking like a good year for Pears here on the croft. Pears take their sweet time, “pears for your heirs” as they say but they seem to be very disease free. With their upright nature, they are susceptible to high exposure, so we have tucked ours in a bit. They need very little pruning and care. Hoping for a sunny next month to really sweeten and swell the fruit!

The bright spring weather has been great for the grafted fruit trees with excellent take rates and onward growth. We start all of our trees under cover while they heal, and then harden them off and get them outside as soon as possible, with the first Pears now outside. Hessle and Onward Pear are looking excellent this year, with our first ever Shinseiki Asian Pears very happy too! Night time temperatures down to 1c this week and bursts of hail are of concern though for new growth, we will take the damp and overcast forecast as it stands!

The fruit tree grafts are looking good in our new dedicated polytunnel. Despite the wet and cloudy April (one of the wettest on record already), the grafts have been healing and sending through the buds. Looks like next week is set fair, it will be nice to get some heat in the polytunnel and get everything moving along at a bit more of a pace! Based on the strong demand, we have grafted many more Quince, Medlar, Plum and Pears. Don’t worry, we still have hundreds of apples of over 50 varieties!
