This week, I found myself at Church Lake and ready to soak in the atmosphere - maybe even catch a few fish.

With the sun shining and 15,000 steps later (felt like Iโd walked to Belgium), I hadnโt spotted a single fishโjust a rogue gang of carp doing laps on Boatpool. No luck there! Undeterred, I decided to switch my focus to the windy side of Church Lake. As I approached, my heart racedโthere they were! A decent group of carp had stacked up right at the edge, some serious chunks among them. I felt like a kid in a candy store. Without losing a moment, I threw in a pre-made ISO Fish stick with all the stealth of a ninja. I didnโt want to give them too much bait, just a mouthful for a passing fish. To my surprise, the biggest of the bunch hoovered it up almost instantly - game on.

Feeling the adrenaline, I trimmed down an ISO Fish wafter and attached it to the Slip-D rig. The thinking behind this choice is the Fluoro is practically invisible and the wafter will sit on top on the super sharp Foundry curv shank hook keeping it out of view in the shallow depths. I prepared to drop it just 4 feet off the bank when suddenly, a massive fish rolled in like a tank, showing her impressive size. I froze, my rig dangling in the wind, looking like a bloke trying not to sneeze in a sniperโs nest. She drifted off momentarily, and I gathered my composure. As I lowered my rig into the water, I took a moment to breathe, hoping for the best.
๐ณ๐ณWhen I peeked back down, to my excitement, she had brought a friend along! Both of them were now circling my rig, one of them practically feeding right next to my hookbait. My heart was pounding as I tried to remain as still as possible, feeling like I was in a game of carp chess.

After what felt like an eternity, the rod ripped off, and I was hooked into something! But instead of the huge carp I was hoping for, a fresh-faced stockie popped up for a quick selfie.

Still, a bite is a bite, and a fish is a fish, especially from the Church. With a smile on my face and the thrill of the chase still buzzing in my veins, I packed up and slipped off home, satisfied with the dayโs adventure.
