How to light your living room for a cosy evening.
Start by thinking about how you use the room. Somewhere to read, somewhere to sit with friends, and somewhere to settle in for the evening will each benefit from a different kind of light.
As a general rule, aim for at least three sources of light. A ceiling light provides a good base, while a table lamp brings light down to a lower level. This softer light catches the surrounding walls and furnishings, helping to create a warmer, more comfortable atmosphere.
Floor lamps are particularly useful for lighting darker corners, while wall lights can draw attention to architectural details such as panelling or a fireplace. A chandelier can provide a focal point in the room, even when switched off.
Consider the natural light, too. A north-facing sitting room may need a little more help in the afternoon than a south-facing room that catches the evening sun.
The aim is to have a choice of lighting throughout the day, from an afternoon spent reading to a quieter evening with the curtains drawn.
