Join us at The Reading Room for a fascinating evening exploring the history of witchcraft, the witch trials and the enduring legacy of the witch.

For centuries, thousands of people were accused of witchcraft, with the vast majority being women. But why were witches hunted and why were so many of those accused female?

Drawing on historical research, author and researcher Charlie Bingham explores the social, religious and political forces that fuelled fear and persecution, and reveals how ideas about gender, power, age, poverty and independence made certain women especially vulnerable to accusation.

Together, we’ll separate myth from reality and uncover the true stories behind one of history’s darkest chapters. We’ll also explore how the image of the witch has transformed, from a figure of fear and suspicion to a modern symbol of female empowerment, resilience and self-determination, and why it continues to resonate today.

Following the talk, stay for a relaxed, guided discussion with Charlie and fellow attendees. There’ll be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, share your thoughts and explore how the history of the witch hunts still echoes in our lives today.
