Happy World Lion Day 🦁

Today we celebrate one of the most iconic animals on the planet — the lion.

Lions are more than just the “king of the jungle”. They are intelligent, social, complex animals with huge personalities. From the legendary roar to the famous lion side-eye, every lion has their own character, quirks and attitude.

For keepers, working with lions means learning their behaviours, respecting their choices and getting to know the individuals behind the mane. They may be powerful predators, but they’re also curious, playful, lazy, dramatic and occasionally very opinionated.

For conservationists, today is a reminder that protecting lions means protecting their habitats, supporting communities and ensuring future generations can still hear that incredible roar.

I'm feeling very reflective of the journey of Prettylittlepasteluk. On Redbubble alone I have sold over 20k items with my art on. Thousands of versions of my art are all over the world. Let's talk about transparency as a zookeeper.

Today I left work feeling low. Not just tired—the kind of exhausted where your eyes feel heavy, your head aches, and even your soul feels weighed down. I was irritable, drained, and on the drive home I found myself questioning everything.

What if I left animal care? What would I even do?

For a moment, it honestly felt like months away from work would fix everything. But time off doesn't solve the systemic issues. Someone else would simply fill the role. Someone younger. Someone more naïve. The cycle continues.

The truth is, I'll get over today. Bad days happen. But I can't shake the feeling that sometimes zookeepers are set up to fail.

Budgets are always tight, yet you watch other collections opening new exhibits and building impressive enclosures. It's hard not to wonder if the grass is greener somewhere else.

Meanwhile, you see colleagues burning out. They're offered better tools, new equipment, or another way to work more efficiently.

But better tools don't help sore feet.

They don't ease aching backs.

They don't replace an extra pair of hands when the workload is too much.

Sometimes what people need isn't another wheelbarrow or a new pressure washer. They need support. They need staffing. They need someone to help carry the load.

I know I'm not the only keeper who has felt this way. We love our animals, and we love what we do. That's exactly why these conversations matter. Passion shouldn't come at the cost of people's wellbeing.
