There was one stand-out thing I REALLY loved about being back at markets…

Hearing people say things like, “Ohhh I love your sweets! I always buy them from The Potting Shed at Boston Manor Park and “We always buy our sweets from you!”

I spend so much of my time making, packing and sending orders without meeting the people who eat them. So hearing comments like these in real life was honestly SO lovely.

A part of the biz I’ve always enjoyed so much is making my local deliveries too… it gives me the same fuzzy feeling. There aren’t many knocks on the door that bring quite so much obvious joy! 😂🍬

Sometimes when you run a small business, particularly one that mostly exists online, you can forget that there are actual people out there who know your little brand, recognise it and choose to buy from it again and again.

So although I’ve decided regular markets probably aren’t quite right for me and my family at the moment, THAT bit of the weekend was pretty special. 🥹❤️

Turns out WLPM has made its way around West London a little more than I realised. 🍬❤️

For the first time in a long time, WLPM was dished up to the public at some local markets!

I wanted to dip my toe back in, see how they went and, more importantly, how they made me feel. They were gorgeous markets and I had a couple of really lovely days.

However… right now, I don’t think regular markets quite work for our family. The prep, the logistics, the heat, the long-suffering husband, the breastfed baby in tow… etc etc 😂 It’s a LOT to get a sweet shop on the road!

That said, Christmas markets are a completely different story — and an absolute must! 🎄🍬

I’m already booked in with Chiswick Creatives and Home of Modern Makers at the end of the year and I literally cannot wait. WLPM and Christmas are a match made in heaven! 🙌

I’ve just handed the final courier the last batch of a 1,500-bag order. 🥹

It’s been quite the week getting it all out, but it’s also been a real moment of reflection for me and my small business.

A while ago I saw a quote that said:

“The first five years of business aren’t about getting rich. They’re about getting good.”

Just over a week ago, I received an email from a huge brand asking if I could supply 1,500 custom bags of sweets, with bespoke packaging, delivered to three different locations… all by today.

I was sitting in my car outside the Post Office when the email came through. Before I’d even driven home, I’d replied with a quote.

Not because I rushed it…

But because after five years of running this business, I instinctively knew:

❤️ Exactly how many hours the job would take.
❤️ Who could help with childcare so I could make it happen.
❤️ How many kilos of sweets I’d need.
❤️ What I could collect from the wholesaler that weekend and what I’d need delivered.
❤️ The cost of the sweets, packaging, stickers and shipping.
❤️ The profit I’d need to make for the job to be worthwhile.

Not once did I wonder whether I could do it. My only question was how. Five years ago, it would’ve been the other way round.

Experience is a funny thing. Most of the time it doesn’t feel like you’re making progress because you’re learning tiny lessons every single day. But then an opportunity comes along like this, and you realise just how much you’ve actually learned.

This order has been my biggest to date, but it’s given me something even more valuable than that… confidence.

Confidence that this business is growing into exactly what I dreamed it could become.

And that’s a pretty sweet feeling. ❤️

Now… when am I getting rich?? 🤪 😜

Just me posing with my trolley at the wholesaler… looking rather smug. 😏🍬

The smugness is because I’ve just landed the biggest order in West London Pick & Mix history! 🥳

Sadly I can’t tell you who it’s for just yet 🤐, but it’s a very well-known (and very yummy!) brand. I can’t wait to share more once everything has been delivered.

I’ll be honest… after taking time away from the business, I worried that everything I’d built might have lost momentum and that I’d be starting from scratch all over again.

This order has given me a huge confidence boost, and I genuinely can’t tell you how grateful I am to everyone who’s placed an order since I officially reopened. Every single order, big or small, has helped me get back on my feet.

Here’s to exciting things ahead…

I’ve been pretty busy since officially reopening and have been reflecting a lot on how the biz has changed over the years, and where I’d like to see it going.

One thing I absolutely love about this job is that no two orders are the same. 🍬
