‘Shingle Street’

Well Prom Art was amazing yesterday, we had lots of fun! I then drove home, unloaded the van and then drove through the night to Suffolk to catch up with the family while they holiday at Shingle Street. Been years since I’ve been back but I arrived as the sun rose just after 5am and sat on the beach enjoying being back. Here till Wednesday then home again to do the final week and a half in before we close the door for good and move onto the next chapter

We’d love to see you in Cockermouth before we close though and we have some amazing discounts offered by us and our artists. A great way to grab that piece of art you’ve been after and the last chance to support our artists

Breaks my heart to be closing but life goes on

'Contemplation under Altair'

A self portrait of me standing next to one of my favourite trees with the Milky Way arching down across the sky and the constellation of Altair shines bright above. Behind the clouds the galactic core of the Milky Way can be seen. The core lies 26,000 light years from us on Earth and is 4 million times the mass of our sun and is named Sagittarius A*. A beautiful tree and a beautiful night in the Northern Lake District.

My name is Louisa Draper,
I chose to do my work experience here because I have been really interested in photography for a few years now and really want to learn more about it. I have had a lot of help from my dad which I am very grateful for but I would also like to learn more about the work from real professionals.

Louisa has had my laptop and all my photos to choose this to post plus for next weeks posts. This afternoon she and I will be editing some Astro photos and hopefully she can learn some tips from me! Seems like she’s more switched on than me though so it may be me learning from her!! (Ben)

Louisa says about this photo: ''I really like the colours on this one and how they contrast each other. I like the silhouetted tree in the centre as a subject. I also think that having someone looking up at the sky is good because I think that it not only gives a sense of scale to the photo but also reminds you of how small we are compared to everything else out there''.

It’s a real pleasure to have Louisa here The Bridge Gallery for work experience and hopefully she can gain some insight and knowledge into the world of photography & art.

Our lovely work experience student Louisa has researched and written the following:

Sugar lift etching is a process where a mixture of water, sugar and black gouache paint creates a formula which is painted onto a metal plate. Once it dries, a wax compound is applied and left to cool and dry. Once and dried the plate is submerged in warm water and left to soak. The wax protects the plate while the sugar dissolves. As the sugar dissolves it expands, biting into the metal plate, revealing the etch.

This piece is by Dorothy Ramsy, a cockermouth meander artist, and is an etch of wast water in the Lake District.
