The Snowman by Raymond Briggs

First edition

Hamish Hamilton, London; 1978

£185

This is an exceptionally lovely example of Raymond Briggs’s wordless children’s book, illustrated only by coloured pencils. It has become a timeless classic, which has been much loved and enjoyed since its publication.

The book was made into an animated television film and symphonic poem in 1982, and was nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 55th Academy Awards, and won a BAFTA in 1983. The short film was accompanied by the iconic song “Walking in the Air”, created by Howard Blake, and sung by Peter Auty. It was later covered by Aled Jones and reached number 5 on the UK singles chart. It was, and remains, a timeless classic loved by generations, and no Christmas is complete without it.

His Dark Materials Trilogy
By Philip Pullman

Scholastic, London; 2001

First Edition
Signed by the jacket illustrator

£535

This is a beautiful example of this first edition; it is a rare and unique find in exceptional, collectible condition. It is a must-have for any collector of modern classic children’s firsts. Pullman began writing ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy in 1993, releasing ‘Northern Lights’, the first instalment, in 1995. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize. ‘The Amber Spyglass’ won the Whitbread Book of the Year in 2001. In 2003, the BBC’s The Big Read poll ranked it at number 3.

Following the success of the three instalments, they were published in this single volume in 2001. ‘Northern Lights’ was translated to the big screen in 2007 as ‘The Golden Compass’, and the BBC broadcast a tv series based on the trilogy from 2019 and 2023.

The trilogy is marketed for young adults, although Pullman has stated he did not write it with a specific audience in mind. The fantasy series is critically acclaimed and functions in part as a retelling and inversion of John Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’, with Pullman commending humanity for original sin, which Milton perceived as its most tragic failing.

There was some controversy over the trilogy and its criticism of religion, but in spite of that, by 2024 more than 22 million copies have been sold in 50 different countries, and it has been translated into 40 different languages. This single volume first edition is truly a rare find to be treasured by any collector, made particularly special for being signed and stamped by the jacket illustrator to the ffep.

Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome

First edition
Jonathan Cape, London; 1930

£6950

This is an exceptionally lovely and rare find, especially in as clean condition as this, with only a couple of other examples currently available. This hard-to-find children’s classic is Ransome’s adventure novel, set in the Lake District in the summer of 1929, and was inspired by a summer spent by Ransome teaching his friends’ children to sail, and is the first book in his Swallows and Amazons series.

The book follows the adventures of two families holidaying in the Lake District, the Walker children and their dinghy, ‘Swallow’, and the Blackett children and their dinghy, ‘Amazon’.

The tale was well received by both critics and readers, with its magic being found in the relatability of the story, allowing children to dream of their own summer adventures. The novel has been adapted on several occasions, to radio, tv, and film, most recently in 2016. This is a rare opportunity to add this beautiful children’s classic to your collection. It is truly a book to cherish.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
By Ian Fleming

Jonathan Cape, London; 1963
First edition

£125

This is a lovely example of this first edition from the popular and very collectible James Bond series by Ian Fleming. It is the 10th in the series, and sees Bond go undercover in order to infiltrate the Swiss mountain top hideaway of his nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, head of SPECTRE, who is attempting to us a fake allergy clinic to spread a biological weapon.

Bond’s mission is complicated when he falls for Tracy di Vicenzo, daughter of a Corsican crime lord. Indeed, this novel is notable for its unusual emotional depth, culminating in one of the series most poignant moments, Bond’s brief marriage to Tracy and her tragic death at the hands of Blofeld.

This is a generally smart example of this first edition, some staining to the boards but clean inside. Housed in a fine facsimile dust jacket.

In all a lovely example that would make an excellent gift or addition to any collection.

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Secker & Warburg, London; 1995
First illustrated edition, second impression

£25

This is a beautiful example of this illustrated edition of Orwell’s classic. This special edition was published to celebrated the 50th anniversary of Orwell’s influential work, and is complemented by illustrations by Ralph Steadman, who is well-known for his contributions to Hunter S. Thompson’s books. Included in this edition is also Orwell’s scarce preface to the Ukrainian edition. This was rare until its inclusion here as so many of the Ukrainian edition copies were seized and burned.

This novel is a satirical representation of Soviet totalitarianism, using animals on the farm as an allegorical device, and themes of power’s corrupting influence, the will to power, and obliteration of history by those in power. The concept of history being revised and adapted by those in power is a recurring theme in Orwell’s work and is seen again in his iconic dystopian work, 1984.

This is a great find, and an exciting addition to the collection of any reader, collector or scholar of Orwell or Steadman.

The Child in Time by Ian McEwan

Jonathan Cape, London; 1987
First edition

£30

This is a lovely example of this first edition by Ian McEwan. It was his third novel, and won the Whitbread Award for best novel in 1987. It tells the haunting story of a children’s author and his wife who experienced every parent’s worst nightmare with the kidnapping of their 3 year old daughter 2 years before, when she was snatched from him on a Saturday morning trip to the supermarket.

It is one of McEwan’s most popular novels and was turned into a BBC tv film in 2017, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kelly MacDonald. This is a beautiful example of this moving first edition, and would be an excellent addition to any modern firsts collection.

Smiley’s People by John le Carré

Holder & Stoughton, London; 1980
First edition

£50

This is a lovely example of this very popular novel by le Carré, third instalment from his Karla Trilogy, following on from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and The Honourable Schoolboy.

This gripping thriller sees George Smiley out of retirement to investigate the death of one of his old agents, stalking his Russian counterpart, codenamed Karla, and resulting in their epic final duel. Smiley must fight a private battle between individual values and a sense of duty to his old service. His only ally - his skill. His only weapon - the ruthlessness of his adversary, which he must emulate to have any hope of victory.

Le Carré is largely considered the greatest espionage writer of the 20th Century, and this is evident in this classic le Carré tale, the last to feature George Smiley as a central figure. It was turned into a BBC mini series starring Alec Guiness in 1982.

This is a very smart example and it would complement any collection it was a part of.

Marathon Man by William Goldman

MacMillan, London; 1975
First Edition

£20

This is a very smart example of this first edition by William Goldman. It was the basis for the film, directed by John Schlesinger and starring Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, Roy Scheider, William Devane and Marthe Keller.

It is a conspiracy thriller, arguably Goldman’s most successful, and it tells the story of Babe, a brilliantly gifted young historian, working on a thesis that will clear his father’s name, hounded to death by Senator McCarthy, and trying to become the greatest marathon runner in the world. Over the course of a few days, Babe’s innocent, ordered world turns into a haunted arena of pursuit and terror, where Babe is caught in the ineradicable stench of the Third Reich, between agents who have only their utter ruthlessness in common, and he soon finds that he needs all his speed, and more (blurb).

Empire of the Sun by J. G. Ballard

Victor Gollancz, London; 1984
First edition

£50

This is a very smart and collectible example of this semi-autobiographical novel by Ballard about a young English boy living in Shanghai during the Japanese occupation, drawing largely on Ballard’s own personal experiences during World War II. It was made into an Oscar-nominated film in 1987, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring John Malkovich and Christian Bale.

It is an extraordinary and original addition to the modern literature of war, a novel worthy to stand among the greats. The horrors and privations of the Japanese internment camps, as seen through the eyes of a child to whom they are part of normal life, are presented unflinchingly; yet the novel is written in prose which is often lyrical and even beautiful. J. G. Ballard was born in Shanghai in 1920 and was interned by the Japanese from 1942-45. After his release he came to England and studied medicine at King’s College, Cambridge (blurb).
