There's a coat I keep coming back to every autumn.

Not because it's particularly complicated. The opposite, actually. It's the simplest, most satisfying thing to make, and every time I do it I remember why I love working with boiled wool. The weight of it. The way it just sits right.

This is the Bianca Coat. A relaxed shape, overlocked together for speed, with a beautiful decorative edge finish and pockets big enough to actually use. You can make it in boiled wool, bouclΓ©, heavyweight jersey. Any of those fabrics that feel like proper autumn.

All it takes to make it is one day in the studio, and you'll leave with a finished garment at the end of it. Sound like something up your street? πŸ’›

Call me crazy...

I know it is still summer, but I always feel a kind of pull back to the sewing room around this time of year. And not for floaty dresses or shirts - but for the cosy autumn staples.

Whether it is because I'm craving the slower pace, the soft textures, or just an afternoon actually doing something with my hands instead of rushing through a to-do list - I'm not sure. But I know I'm not the only one.

This season I'm running three workshops that all feel right for this time of year. A coat. A retreat. A day with jersey and knit fabrics. Three very different things, but all of them asking you to stop, sit down and make something that matters.

If any of that sounds appealing, have a look at what's coming up, and join me for a day or three of cosy sewing πŸ‚

Have you been sitting with a half-finished project for months?

I understand that sometimes life gets in the way. I know my WIP pile isn't always the smallest. And sometimes it's a fitting issue that takes a bit more effort to solve, or the type of fabric requires a bit more care and attention than my trusty linen. Sometimes there's no reason other than lack of time.

If you're reading this going 'I am the same', I want to invite you along to my Sewing Sanctuary this autumn.

Three days in the studio in October, with no agenda other than to sew. Bring whatever you're working on. Bring a list if you have one. I'll be there the whole time and you can ask me as much or as little as you like.

Sometimes you just need the time and the space. And a room full of other people doing the same thing.😁

Secure your place now πŸͺ‘

It is August, and we are heading into late summer. The days still feel long and balmy, and now that we are out of heatwave territory, I've been spending lots of time in the cool comfort of my sewing studio.

Making, in all its forms, is a wonderful pastime. It is productive, it is engaging, it is educational. It keeps your mind and your hands active, and you often get something wonderful at the end of it. I have been finding it so rewarding to just sit down and sew recently. I don't take that time for granted.

Have you been feeling the same? If you have been thinking about dedicating more time to your craft, whether you're starting out or have just fallen out of the habit, I have lots of workshops coming up over the next few months to help you on your way. Come along to the studio, learn something new, and leave with something brilliant. 😁

Last chance to get yours 🫒

All this week I've been sharing my story, and why I think it is so important for The Cloth Cutter to be a place that empowers you and gives you the confidence to go out and create clothes that truly work for you.

Whether that is through handy tips that I ramble about whilst sat at my sewing machine, or opening up the comments for thoughts on trickier topics that people in the sewing community don't always address, I want it to feel like this community is a space for everyone. Because it is!

To say thank you, I'm giving away the pattern and tutorial for my favourite piece at the minute. Safe to say, my bucket hat has had a lot of wear during the heatwave πŸ˜… I'm giving you the pattern and tutorial to be able to make your own, as my way of saying thank you for being here.

Get yours here: https://mailchi.mp/theclothcutter/freebuckethatpattern

And thanks for following along. Jules x

How it feels to have a mannequin that looks like you:

This is the result of the Make A Moulage workshop - giddiness, pride, relief, all because fitting your clothes just became so much easier.

In this workshop, we work together to create a body double of you, taking accurate measurements and then recreating your shape on a mannequin.

I've heard 'life changing' more than a few times when running this workshop. There's a reason it is one of my most popular classes.

You've got a block that fits. Now what?

This is one of the most common places people get stuck in their sewing practice. The block is done. It fits. But the gap between a fitted foundation and an actual garment - with style lines, design details, shape and movement - feels like a leap nobody quite explained how to make.

This three-day workshop is built to bridge exactly that gap.

Working from your own bodice, skirt or trouser blocks, you'll learn how to develop original, wearable patterns from your own fitted foundation.

- Dart manipulation
- Cut-and-spread techniques.
- Style lines
- Seam placement.
- How to assess a design and understand which adaptations to start with.
-How to translate an idea into a pattern that actually works.

It's taught in a small group of maximum six people, with demonstrations followed by supported practical work. You'll leave with a finished pattern developed from your own block, a repeatable method for future designs, and the shift from guessing to designing with real intention.

If you've done the Personal Dress and Sleeve Block or Trouser Block workshop, or you already have blocks that fit, this is the natural next step.

"I keep meaning to book and then it's sold out."

The 2027 dates are now live, which means this is the moment to not do that πŸ˜…

Now's your chance to put a day (or two...or three πŸ‘€) in your diary that belongs to your sewing, to learning something new, to spending time in a studio with other makers. Those days have a way of being exactly what you needed.

Take a look at what's coming up in 2027 and get your name down early ✨ View the workshop calendar here: https://theclothcutter.co.uk/apps/bookthatapp/calendar

This workshop starts with something you already know fits.

Clone Your Clothes is one of those workshops that surprises people with how much they take away from it. On the surface it sounds simple: you trace off a pattern from a top or dress you love.

But what happens in the process is that you start to understand how that garment was constructed. Why the neckline sits where it does. How the shaping through the body was achieved. What you could change in a future version.

You'll leave with a pattern, a toile and considerably more understanding than you arrived with 😁

Book your place at the next Clone Your Clothes workshop here: https://theclothcutter.co.uk/products/clone-your-clothes?start=2026-09-01T00:00&select=2026-09-17T10:00

There's a truth that the sewing industry doesn't want you to know...

It's not you - it's the pattern.

Patterns are built around a standardised body that doesn't particularly resemble anyone in real life. They're averages. They have to be for them to be sold - it's not possible to mass produce patterns tailored to every individual. They are starting points that need a lot of adjusting before they reflect the person wearing them, and that can be tricky to do for yourself

But if you have a mannequin that reflects your exact proportions..? Well, that changes everything.

At the Make a Moulage Workshop, over two days you'll measure yourself and build your own body double. A mannequin in your exact proportions that you can use as a reference point for fitting, pattern development and understanding why clothes behave the way they do on your shape.

It's hands-on, a fun project, and genuinely useful for every project that follows.
