BudeStrings Tutor and Luthier

BudeStrings Tutor and Luthier Self taught musician, luthier, tutor and repairer of multiple instruments. I am a self-taught musician of some 35 years’ experience.

Since the early days of intensively playing on the local folk scene I have learnt over a dozen instruments and taught myself to write and compose as well as record, mix and produce. I have performed solo and with several bands, and extensively write and compose my own material. I have assisted in the design and construction of semi pro recording studios, carried out extensive sound engineering wor

k for live performances and recording sessions and become fluent in using Protools, the industry standard recording platform. For the past ten years I have also been carrying out repairs restorations and maintenance on stringed instruments, keyboards and amps. Professionally I have worked as an industrial chemist, I have run my own construction firm and for the past ten years I have been a freelance music teacher. This has involved teaching from home as well as peripatetically at local schools, running workshops and assisting musically oriented school trips abroad. I also spent several years working at a local comprehensive school as music technician which allowed me to use my experience in sound engineering, studio design, score writing, music based IT and instrument repairs. I have taught all age groups from ages 5 to 65+, at all levels of ability and commitment, from casual hobbyists to fast developing ambitious young musicians. While all types and ages of students bring their own challenges and rewards I have consistently developed an excellent relationship with my students which is the cornerstone of the success of my teaching philosophy. Students who choose to make the most of what I offer move very quickly. I have elevated several students from novice level to playing pieces equivalent to classical grade 6 and above in under 2 years – this is largely because I focus very much on getting my students playing pieces they enjoy while feeding in relevant music theory later on. While it is in the nature of freelance teaching for students to come and go I maintain a core of loyal students many of which stay with me for years – which is the best kind of review you can get.
