The first Black combat pilot in history — and the world almost forgot his name. Eugene Bullard flew for France in WWI, boxed his way across Europe, ran a nightclub in Harlem’s golden age, and spied for the French Resistance in WWII. America wouldn’t let him fly for his own country. France gave him thirteen medals.

Luther Skaggs Jr. — the quiet Kentucky lineman who became a Marine, took command mid-battle on Guam, and held his position through the night rather than risk giving it away by calling for help.

He was shot twice in the face during a colonial campaign most people have never heard of. Rather than accept a glass eye, he threw it out a taxi window and wore a plain black patch for the rest of his life instead.

This is the second chapter in the true story of Adrian Carton de Wiart — from his brief, almost anticlimactic wound in the Boer War, through the years of polo and privilege in India, to the assault in British Somaliland that cost him his eye and gave him the look that would define him through three more wars. He refused treatment in Egypt on purpose, specifically to force his own transfer somewhere closer to the war he actually wanted to fight.

This was just the beginning.

1941. Royal Ordnance Factory, Thorp Arch.

The King and Queen came to see the war machine — not the guns, but the hands that made them.

Behind these factory gates, women worked around explosive powder for hours on end, their skin sometimes turning yellow from the chemicals. They earned the nickname “canaries.” The danger was real — filling factories across Britain suffered fatal explosions throughout the war — but the women kept coming back, shift after shift.

When Their Majesties arrived to inspect the lines, the workers didn’t just stand at attention. They cheered. They clapped. For a few minutes, the war felt like it might actually be won — by ordinary people doing extraordinary, unglamorous work.

No medals for this. No parades. Just the quiet, dangerous labor that kept an empire fighting.
