Homemade Kahlúa makes a fantastic holiday gift—it's warm, rich, and feels cozy and luxurious. Unlike vanilla extract, which takes months, a batch of festive coffee liqueur is ready to sip in just 2 to 3 weeks (or right away in a pinch, though resting smooths out the alcohol edge).
To give it that distinct Christmas twist, this recipe infuses traditional dark roast coffee and brown sugar with festive spices: fresh orange peel, cinnamon, and whole cloves.
Ingredients & Batch Yield
Strong Brewed Coffee: 4 cups (1 quart) freshly brewed dark roast coffee or espresso (or cold brew concentrate diluted slightly).
Sugars: 2 cups granulated sugar + 1 cup dark brown sugar (for deep molasses notes).
Alcohol Base: 3 cups (24 oz) 80-proof Rum (dark or spiced rum works best for Christmas) or unflavored vodka.
Holiday Spice & Vanilla:
1 whole vanilla bean (split lengthwise) or 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
2 cinnamon sticks
1 strip fresh orange peel (avoid the bitter white pith)
2 whole cloves
Instructions
1.Brew the coffee base:10 min. Brew 4 cups of very strong dark roast coffee. While it's steaming hot, pour it into a large pot.
2.Dissolve sugars & spices:5 min. Add both sugars, the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and orange peel to the hot coffee. Stir over low heat for 3 to 5 minutes until every sugar crystal has dissolved. Do not boil.
3.Cool completely:30-45 min. Remove the pot from the heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature. Pouring alcohol into hot liquid will evaporate the alcohol content, so patience here is key.
4.Add rum and vanilla:3 min. Once cool, discard the orange peel, cloves, and cinnamon sticks. Stir in the 3 cups of dark rum (or vodka) and the split vanilla bean (or vanilla extract).5.Bottle and age:2-3 weeks (pantry).Funnel the liqueur into clean glass swing-top bottles or mason jars (including the vanilla bean segment inside the bottle if using). Store in a cool, dark place for 2 to 3 weeks to let the flavors meld into a velvet-smooth finish.
Holiday Presentation Tip:
Pour into clear 8 oz or 12 oz swing-top glass bottles, tie a piece of red-and-white baker's twine around the neck with a cinnamon stick or dried orange slice, and add a label with serving suggestions (great over ice, in a White Russian, or stirred into Christmas morning coffee).
