Markets are about people. Sure they are brilliant places to buy stuff such as bread, cheese and fish and clothes, toys and more, but fundamentally they are about real people and friendly faces. A place to have a chat as you feel the avocados at the fruit and veg or ask for a recommendation on the cheese stall. For a local it's impossible not to bump into someone you know for a quick catch up as you wait by a stall or guide a visitor to find their way around the town. Berwick Market is still a work in progress as we encourage diverse new traders to join us and slowly smarten up areas such as the Butter Market. Yes, those huts will get painted! We are fundamentally lucky be at the heart of such a special town, chatting, trading and enjoying cheery banter as has happened here in the same spot as it has for centuries.

Hope to see you at Market Wednesdays and Saturdays each week.

Market traders are very special. Not many people are tough enough to get a stall up and unload their wares in the early morning and stand out all day in all weathers.
Toughest of the lot has to be Billy a much loved and respected trader who has stood on Berwick Market for 22 years selling a fantastic selection of superb quality, vegetables, eggs and bedding plants. Along with Maggi his sidekick and stalwart helper he stands whatever the weather throws at Marygate and is usually the last to go home at the end of the day.
So if you value super fresh vegetables, less plastic wrapping and a friendly chat with your hand picked fruit, bring your bags and say hello to them on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
22 years in all weathers . Respect!

Also Fundraising in aid of Berwick and Borders Carers on their stall. Go along and have a chat and find out more.

The sun is out and it's a lovely day so why not head to market? Grab super fresh veg, smoked fish, a woollen throw or a new handbag perhaps?
We always head round the shops after and will definitely be having a look at the temporary pop up Antique shop on Bridge St. We love that there is always something interesting going on in Berwick!

Buying on line simply doesn't cut it. Hanging around for deliveries and sending things back? No thanks.
Instead we love the independent shops and High St staples in Berwick, who day in day out, provide a friendly and helpful, face face experience . We admire the tradition of those businesses who have been in the town for so many years and those gutsy people who have opened interesting shops, galleries, cafes and bars more recently too. Throw the market in the mix on Wednesdays and Saturdays and why would you go anywhere else? This is what helps make Berwick such an interesting, unique and quality place to shop and along with our beautiful Heritage, river and beaches a wonderful place to visit.
So if you are visiting, take it for granted you will receive a friendly welcome and as a local, remember to support those brilliant local businesses that are here for you.
Why not tell us where you love to shop, eat and drink in Berwick and why in the comments below?
