Do a few grams less really make a difference? 🤔
Most anglers would say no.

After all, what difference can a few grams make on a reel that already weighs several hundred grams?

The answer is: more than you might think.

During a powerful cast, the reel is not simply sitting still in your hands. It is being accelerated together with the rod, creating forces significantly higher than its static weight.

A reduction of just 100 g in reel weight can momentarily reduce the effective load during the casting motion by approximately 0.5–1 kg, depending on casting style and acceleration.

But the benefits go far beyond angler comfort.

Every cast and every turn of the handle forces the reel's internal components to move the spool up and down:

⚙️ The shaft supports the spool weight
⚙️ The oscillation system drives it
⚙️ The wormshaft and gears continuously accelerate, decelerate and reverse its movement

The heavier the spool, the greater the forces acting on these components.

A typical surfcasting spool can weigh around 120 g. With an average weight of only 40 g, Yasaki spools reduce the moving oscillating mass by approximately 67%.

That means less energy is required to move the system and lower loads are transferred to the shaft, wormshaft, gears and supporting components throughout the reel's lifetime.
