The main disadvantages of container straddle carriers are:

(1) The mechanical structure is complex, with many hydraulic components, a high failure rate, high technical requirements for maintenance personnel, high maintenance and operation costs, and high equipment costs.

(2) The stacking straddle carrier has a high and narrow body, a high center of mass, poor walking stability, and high requirements for road surface and driver operation level.

(3) Container terminals using straddle carriers have a large number of yard channels and a low number of container stacking layers. Compared with yards using tire-mounted or rail-mounted container gantry cranes, the yard utilization rate is low, and it is more difficult to turn over and stack containers in the yard.

Container straddle carriers are widely used in European container ports. The design and construction of my country's specialized container terminals started in the 1970s, when tire-mounted container gantry cranes (RTGs) were being developed and developed. Since the quality of straddle carriers at that time was poor and there were many problems, my country's specialized container terminals adopted the RTG solution from the beginning, and the application of container straddle carriers was very small.

Container straddle carriers are mainly divided into stacking type and transport type according to their functions and heights. Stacking type straddle carriers are mainly used for horizontal transportation and stacking operations. The frame structure is relatively tall and can stack 2 to 4 layers of containers. Transport type straddle carriers are mainly used for horizontal transportation operations between the terminal and the storage yard. They have no stacking function or can only stack 1 layer of containers.

The main advantages of container straddle carriers:

(1) One machine can complete multiple operations, including self-collection, handling, stacking, loading and unloading, etc., without the assistance of other machines in the middle, reducing the operation links and the types and number of terminal machinery and equipment, simplifying the entire loading and unloading transportation system, and facilitating organization and management.

(2) Strong mobility and flexible operation. Compared with horizontal transport equipment such as container trailers and container automatic guided vehicles, container loading and unloading equipment only needs to unload the containers at the front of the dock. The straddle carrier can grab and transport the containers by itself. There is no need for accurate positioning for loading, which can give full play to the operating efficiency of the loading and unloading equipment.
