I got to spend the whole weekend on a spring pole lathe! I’m learning from our carpenter who made this reproduction lathe the year I was born. I managed to make three butter print handles and two tops. I’m really looking forward to getting more time on this lathe.

After 3 years of wanting to make one, we finally made a birch besom! We managed to luck out with finding the one freshly fallen birch tree in the grove, then hauled the twigs back. It was certainly a two-person job especially with strapping the twigs together before binding, and tapping the handle in, but we’re eager to make another.

Recent broom roundup! I’m back to making standardized round brooms for the next little while. I’m getting more and more comfortable with the winding machine with each broom (which used to be my enemy, if you don’t know). All bound using h**p cord.

Last year I was bitten by the knitting bug and the David Lynch bug, so I am honored to have a piece featured in , a digital David Lynch tribute exhibition. So many incredibly talented artists participated so please check it out at elihwnaem.com!

The exhibition also has a charity initiative benefiting , an organization “providing social, emotional and mental healthy girls affected by the Eaton Fires.” We have a charity raffle going on which you can learn more about on the exhibition page () and profits from the sales of the catalogue benefit them as well.

So much beautiful work went into this exhibition and I’m beyond happy to be a part of it.

As of Monday, I officially finished all of my degree requirements!! I’m already back to broom making and some more pictures will be popping up over the next few weeks. I’ll also be doing some back-posting of some knitting projects I worked on over the year. I’m so excited to get back into it!

I’ll be at the for the last time tomorrow (August 24)! This will probably be the last time to snag a broom in Nova Scotia for the foreseeable future—moving into my last year of undergrad is gonna be busy. Make sure to swing by between 8:30-1:00. I’ll have floor brooms, hand brooms, cobweb brooms, hearth brooms, and pot scrubbers.

It has taken me a very long time to figure out what my “style” is when it comes to floor brooms, but this one was so much fun to make.

Can you tell how much I dread stitching since I left most of it for the last day? I think it’s safe to say my stitching got quite a bit better during my residency. Most of the time when I’m stitching, I put it off until the very last second and rush through. I really got to take my time here and make sure everything was neat.

Over the last two weeks, I got to live out my literal dream: running away to a lighthouse to make brooms. I had the incredible opportunity to be selected as Port Bickerton Lighthouse’s 2024 Artist in Residence. Spending two weeks on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia was a refreshing and inspiring opportunity in relation to my brooms. Though this experience has been about much more than broom making for me; it was really the culmination of the past five years of my life. Read all the sappy details accompanied with photos I took on my grandfather’s film camera on my blog. Find it at fullshelfcrafts.com or through the link in my bio.
