Pansy are one of the most recognizable cool-weather flowers, loved for their “little face” markings and huge range of colours — deep purple, yellow, blue, white, orange, black, and even multicoloured blends. They belong to the Viola family and are related to violets and Johnny-jump-ups.

A few interesting things about pansies:

* They thrive in cooler temperatures, which is why you see them everywhere in spring and fall in places like Ontario.
* They can survive light frost and sometimes even bloom through mild winters.
* Their petals are edible and are often used to decorate cakes, salads, and cocktails.
* In Victorian flower symbolism, pansies represented “thinking of you” or remembrance. The name comes from the French word pensée, meaning “thought.”

What they need to grow well

* Sun: Full sun to partial shade
* Temperature: Prefer cool weather over summer heat
* Water: Moist but well-drained soil
* Feeding: Light fertilizer every few weeks helps blooms last longer
* Deadheading: Removing faded flowers encourages more blooming
