SingSong Inc. SingSong Inc. is a Newfoundland and Labrador recording company owned and operated by performing artist Jim Payne. John’s bluegrass band, Crooked Stovepipe.

It was started in 1989, and is dedicated to traditional and contemporary music, story, song & dance that reflect the Newfoundland experience. SingSong Inc is a record label, distribution and production company owned and operated by Jim Payne, local singer, songwriter, musician and purveyor of the folk and traditional music of Newfoundland and Labrador. Started in 1989 to record members of the old

guard of traditional music players, the label has grown to approximately sixty titles distributed through its website, www.singsonginc.ca. Specializing in Music that Reflects the Newfoundland and Labrador Experience, the label features music ranging from that of legendary Newfoundland and Labrador fiddle and accordion players and traditional ballad singers to the contemporary crop of folk and traditional musicians making their mark on the local music scene today. In between you’ll find archival recordings of historic performances from lumber camps, fishing boats and stages, contemporary songwriters, traditional Mi’kMa’q musicians from the four Atlantic Provinces, Inuit singers from Labrador with their renditions of classical music brought to the coast by early Moravian missionaries, topical and labour songs, a CD-ROM of 517 traditional Newfoundland songs collected in the 1950s by researcher Kenneth Peacock, the Nain Brass Band, anthologies of the beloved Irish trio, Ryan’s Fancy, commemorative recordings made for the 400th anniversary of John Guy’s plantation at Cupids and the 100th anniversary of Captain Bob Bartlett’s historic expedition to get Peary within reach of the North Pole, a CD marking the 50th anniversary of Confederation, and several of the finest young folk and traditional musicians active in Newfoundland and Labrador today. Among the collection of artists whose music is featured on the site, you’ll find accordion players Aaron Collis, Graham Wells and Vince Collins, fiddlers Christina Smith, Emilia Bartellas and Danette Eddy, and the multi-talented Colleen Power with a range of music from traditional Newfoundland ballads to her own songs in French and English, her cutting edge original songs to a children’s album where she’s accompanied by St. You’ll also find Pat and Joe Byrne with Baxter Wareham, the Freels, Labrador songwriter Richard Neville, Tickle Harbour, Jim Payne and Fergus O’Byrne, and the last recordings of the late Minnie White, Rufus Guinchard and Dorman Ralph. The label also features a dozen recordings produced by Memorial University’s Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media and Place (MMaP), including an anthology illustrating a regional breakdown of folk music from across Canada, historic folk recordings from rural Newfoundland, two albums of songs devoted to the logging industry, and a book on Maud Karpeles, one of the earliest folk song collectors to come to this province. Watch for musical clips from the SingSong Inc catalogue in the coming days on this page. For more, check out www.singsonginc.ca, where you can hear previews of each individual track on the site, and purchase single tracks, full CD downloads including artwork and liner notes, and order hard copy CDs to be delivered by mail.

Happy International Nurses Day, fans & !

To celebrate this important day, and in appreciation for the tremendous work provided by front line healthcare staff, today, May 12th, 2026 - we present «A Health Care Work Song». The song is a modern day work shanty, written and performed in the folk tradition as a tribute to those in the health care trade.

Written by , this tribute was inspired by personal experiences over two weeks caring for his father Eugene Clarke, in 4 North A Wing, Health Sciences Center, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. The dedication and professionalism of the front line staff in the midst of the difficult circumstances in which they function was admirable, eye opening and certainly worthy of capturing in song. During the long hours the classic work song the “Double Sledder Lad” came to mind and the verses took shape as the various care givers came and went on with their daily routines.

Sadly, Mr. Clarke passed in 4 North A on March 19th, 2026 at the age of 84. This song and fundraiser will hopefully serve as a legacy to benefit others.

The song was produced by John Clarke, Colleen Power and Jim Payne, recorded and mixed by Colleen Power at Baygirl Music and
mastered by Jason Whelan at Sound Solution. On vocals - Allison Walsh, Anna Corcoran, Charla Woodford, Fergus O' Byrne and Jim Payne, with Jim Payne on guitar and accordion, Colleen Power on baritone ukulele and Shana Brown on accordions.

Proceeds from Canadian Cancer Society donations and BandCamp downloads will go to benefit Daffodil Place in continuing their mandate of housing support for those undergoing cancer treatment. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are eligible for a tax deductible receipt.

Happy Tuesday, fans and !

We have a brilliant addition to our Bandcamp page today, on the heels of International Workers' Day on May 1.

In 1973, a strike of hard rock miners (United Steelworkers of America, Local 5457) in the company town of Buchans, Newfoundland, against the multi-national American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO), fostered a series of militant union songs. A lyrical articulation of significant issues, these creations inspired solidarity within the community labour force and bolstered the workers determination to achieve major concessions, which they ultimately attained, from an often intransigent management. Sung daily by hundreds of strikers and their families as they marched through the town, the vital songs repeated on this CD still convey the drama and emotions which tore apart a community from March 15 to October 2 of that year.

Recorded and produced by the late Peter Narváez, Come Hell or High Water was released on LP in 1977, and features The Buchaneers, a collection of local musicians who also happened to be miners on the picket line.

A word from our founder and owner/operator Jim Payne: "I feel very comfortable with making the SingSong Inc catalogue available on BandCamp because, of all the independent web sites that offer downloads in all file formats as well as a streaming service, it aligns nicely with the SingSong Inc ethos of making sure that artists get maximum benefit from the sale of their music. I look forward to completing the upload of the full SingSong Inc catalogue over the next little while."

Happy Friday, fans and followers!

Following the success of Colleen Power’s dual album launch at the Majestic Theatre on 01 March, she’s been getting great reviews internationally, making the Top 20 playlist on college radio stations across the US and winning an award in France. Now, her self-titled 10th album has been reviewed in the German publication, Folker. Read on!

"Rarely has a name been so synonymous with what you hear. The lady from St. John's, Newfoundland, and her songs come across as incredibly powerful, and have done so for over thirty years. Folk, rock, country, and Americana are equally and diversely represented on the album, which is no surprise given that there are no fewer than nineteen fellow musicians. She has the skill and knows how to use it."

"Selten stand ein Name so sehr für das, was zu hören ist. Die Dame aus St. John's, Neufundland, und ihre Songs kommen ungemein kraftvoll rüber, und das seit über dreißig Jahren. Folk, Rock, Country und Americana sind auf dem Album gleichermaßen und abwechslungsreich vertreten, kein Wunder bei sage und schreibe neunzehn Mitmusizierenden.
Gekonnt ist eben gekonnt."

- Mike Kamp, Folker
