Tayside Plant Babies Plant, Flower, and Herb Seedlings all started from seed by me. I harden them off in my little greenhouse for beautiful healthy plants.

Tomorrow will be the last sale of the season! Anything leftover tomorrow afternoon will go in my garden, it's too hot now in the greenhouse and they need to go in the ground. Sale will be in the morning until noon at 5331 Lanark County Road 43 Perth.

How I plant my tomatoes:

Take the tomato plant and pinch off all the leaves below the very top.

Dig a deep hole, deep enough you can plant the tomato down to the top leaves. The stem grows roots so the deeper you plant the stronger and healthier your plant will be since it will have a large root system.

Put an egg in the hole and crack it with your shovel. This provides calcium and will help prevent blossom end rot. I did not do this on 2 of my 22 tomato plants as an experiment a couple years ago and the 2 without the egg both got blossom end rot while the others did not.

Plant your tomato up to the top leaves and water.

And that's it!

With the long weekend coming up many people will be looking to plant their gardens (me too!). Some things need to wait for warmer temperatures overnight to plant, specifically tomatoes and peppers. My rule (passed down to me from my farmer grandpa) is not to plant tomatoes and specifically peppers until it is consistently 10+ degrees at night. Peppers can stunt if planted out earlier, both peppers and tomatoes are tropical plants and enjoy warm weather.

So far Monday's projected low is only 5 degrees, so I will be waiting to see what next weekend brings before I risk my tomatoes and pepper seedlings. Many years I plant those the first week of June to be sure they will be okay after all the hard work and care I put into them since February and March. 🫑

I will be direct sowing this weekend though, and will be happy to see my garden on its way!

This is Tancook Island cabbage I started from seed last year and overwintered in my cool room. Replanted this year to grow for seed and they're alive! Very happy to see the new growth and that my experiment worked. Cabbages are biennial meaning it produces seed in its second year. I should have lots of seeds for this rare Canadian variety for next year.
