I've had quite a few people ask how they could dye yarn with dandelions themselves after following along with my recent experiment.
Rather than trying to answer everyone individually, I decided to write a blog post documenting my process.
Inside, I've shared what I did, what worked, what didn't, some of the supplies I used, and a few lessons I learned along the way.
If you've ever been curious about natural dyeing, wondered whether dandelions can actually dye yarn, or thought about trying it yourself, I hope you'll find it helpful.
One thing I didn't expect? How much respect I would gain for natural dyers and the way it had to be done before the invention of commercial dyes. The process is slower, less predictable, and far more difficult to reproduce than working with acid dyes, that's for sure.
The post follows the experiment from start to finish, from harvesting the flowers and mordanting the yarn to the dye baths, black tea modification, and the final skeins: Wallflower and Twice Steeped.
