Hi everyone, I wanted to share an exciting project I've been working on since last fall!

PLEASE NOTE: My nursery is still open, but over the next few days I'll be working on this project at home. If you'd like anything from the greenhouse, just let me know and I'll head over to the nursery to assist you. Apologies for any inconvenience.

This is a coldframe; an unheated greenhouse structure used for working with plant material. I built it in November and have since been using it to overwinter potted plants and starting perennial seeds.

Potted plants are much more susceptible to winter damage than plants growing in the ground because their roots aren't insulated by the surrounding soil. A coldframe helps protect roots from extreme conditions and greatly slows the freeze/thaw cycle, allowing the potted plants to go through their natural dormancy cycle while improving their chances of survival.

Many perennial seeds also require exposure to winter conditions before they will germinate. A coldframe allows them to experience those conditions while keeping them protected.

A LOT of the seeds I planted last fall have now started to germinate, so it's time to pot them up and get them growing! This is the start of a decent selection of perennial plants! 😁

I had to build the coldframe at home because it needed occasional watering throughout the winter when conditions became too dry. I couldn't do that at the nursery since I don't have running water there, and my IBC totes would have frozen solid if left full of water. That's why I'll be working from home for the next few days.

Hope you're all doing well!

Also for sale will be 3 totally funky and awesome birdhouses made by Hillary Dionne ($50 each), and some beautiful 7 litre terracotta pots which are perfect for a potted herb garden, a small annual planter, or your houseplants! ($12 each)

⭐️🌱 SPREAD THE WORD! STRANDED NURSERY IS OPENING FOR THE SEASON ON THURSDAY, JUNE 4th! 🌱⭐️

This year I am offering the majority of my vegetables in 6 packs, which are $5 each. Some single plants are available as well, for $3 each.

Available on opening day: Tomatoes (lots of Scotia’s & Roma’s this year!), Cucumbers, Bush Beans, Runner Beans, Corn, Squash, and Zucchinis. Drop in to see which varieties!

Also… a very special crop will be available which is directly related to this island’s history… Tancook Cabbages! I have very limited amounts of these available in 6 packs, so they will be sold on a first come first serve basis.

A small selection of beautiful annuals will come in the next few weeks, and some new vegetables. Don’t worry! Everything does not have to go in the ground at the same time or right away. Planting multiple rounds of crops allows for a longer harvest window, and a larger yield. For annuals, it delays flowering so that you have pops of colour in your garden when you normally wouldn’t.

Later in the summer I will also have some perennials available as well, very excited about that!

Can’t wait to see you all! 🌱

Today’s project: an area that’s properly protected from the deer. This will keep my veggie garden safe, and eventually, my perennial plant stock!

The earth is as shallow as 6” in some spots at the nursery, so I had to come up with a creative fencing solution since properly anchoring a fence into the ground is not a possibility.

Concrete reinforcement mesh panels were used as the actual fence panels, and to make gabion cages to hold the stacked rocks in place against the posts. Each panel is 4’ x 8’ in size, so I was able to cut one panel in half to get 2 cages. Driving the posts into the thin ground would not have been durable enough to hold a fence up, so above ground support was required, and these simple cages sure did the trick! The posts are super solid and aren’t going to budge.

I am very excited and pleased with how it looks and how it turned out. All that’s left to do is to create two gates on either end to get in and out, and run steel cable under the panels between each cage to have a barrier underneath as well. It is quite tall, but if needed the posts can be easily extended and cable ran above the panels as well for extra height. I cannot wait to fill it with plants! 😁

I wouldn’t have been able to make so much progress without the world’s best helper, Jonathan! We did a LOT of work today, thank you for everything you did with me today! ❤️

Hello everyone!

As the weather slowly but surely gets warmer (emphasis on slowly…), I’ll start doing more and more at the nursery. I will be offering vegetables and herbs in my greenhouse again, as well as some annuals eventually, and I am hoping to have a LOT more perennial stock to offer later in the year as well. There might even be a few other special things this year, like planters and some very cool birdhouses!

This year I will also be offering greenhouse crops in 6-packs! Single plants will still be available for things that you might not necessarily need multiple of, or for specialty plants.

I was hoping I’d be able to move into the greenhouse earlier this year, but as I have no way of heating it through the nights, the weather ultimately dictates when I can do that. I apologize, as I understand the desire to start gardening as soon as you possibly can.

I do not have an official opening date yet, but you can likely expect it to be around June like last year. I will keep you all posted if things change!

Thanks all, I’m very excited for another season at the nursery, I’ve got some big plans for this year! 😬
