Yesterday was a pretty exciting day for us at The Cookiery as we had the opportunity to be part of a press conference with London Mayor Josh Morgan Office of Mayor Josh Morgan , where he announced two important initiatives: support for local businesses navigating tariffs and proposed changes to London’s home-based food business bylaws.
But here’s what makes this announcement even more special to us.
Earlier this year, Mayor Morgan attended CookieFest Canada , where he met some truly incredible women from our cookie community. One of those women was Mary Jane Just Shortbread who spoke with him about the challenges home bakers face under London’s current bylaws and encouraged him to take a closer look.
And that conversation helped set something in motion.
With over 400 bakers from around North America and the world coming together in London for CookieFest, our event is a testament to just how large, passionate, and thriving this community really is. It also highlights the growing demand for policies that recognize and support home-based baking businesses.
To think that CookieFest, an event we created to bring cookie decorators together to learn, connect, and celebrate their craft, may have helped spearhead meaningful change for home bakers in our city is something we’re incredibly proud of.
CookieFest has always been about so much more than cookies. It’s about community, connection, empowering small business owners, and giving people a voice.
We’re grateful to Mary Jane for speaking up, to Mayor Morgan for listening and taking a closer look at the issue, and to everyone who continues to advocate for our baking community.
From CookieFest to City Hall, we’re so thankful to be part of something that can spark change in our city! ❤️
