Summer in Edmonton is finally here — and so is bee and wasp season. If you or your child gets stung this summer, knowing what to do in the first few minutes can make all the difference between a minor inconvenience and a bigger problem.

For most people, a bee or wasp sting will cause immediate sharp pain, followed by redness, swelling, and itching at the site — all of which are normal minor reactions that can be managed safely at home. Here is what to do.

If you can see a stinger left behind — remember, only bees leave their stinger in the skin, wasps do not — remove it as quickly as possible by scraping it away with a fingernail or the edge of a card. Do not squeeze it or use tweezers, as this can release more venom into the skin. Once the stinger is out, wash the area gently but thoroughly with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection. Apply a cold compress to help bring down swelling and ease the pain, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen if needed. To calm redness and itching, a hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion applied to the area can provide welcome relief.

If the person has a known allergy and carries an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen), use it immediately and still call 911.
