DIY carpet cleaning can seem like a quick fix — but the wrong method can cause permanent damage.

Many homeowners try to remove stains or freshen up carpets with rental machines, store-bought spot removers, or homemade cleaning mixtures. While some products may help with light surface soil, they can also create bigger problems if used incorrectly.

Common issues we see from DIY carpet cleaning include:

Over-wetting the carpet
Too much moisture can soak into the backing and underpad, leading to browning, odour, mildew, or stains that keep returning.

Using the wrong cleaning product
High-pH cleaners, bleach-based products, or harsh spot removers can strip colour, leave residue, or create permanent light spots.

Scrubbing too aggressively
Scrubbing can damage carpet fibres, distort the texture, and spread stains deeper into the carpet.

Leaving soap residue behind
Residue attracts dirt, which can make the carpet look dirty again shortly after cleaning.

Setting the stain permanently
Heat, strong chemicals, or the wrong cleaning method can lock certain stains into the fibre, making them much harder to remove later.

The safest first step is always to blot gently, avoid over-saturating the area, and test any product in a hidden spot first.

If the stain is large, colourful, chemical-based, or caused by bleach, paint, ink, pet accidents, or dye transfer, it’s best to have it assessed professionally before trying more products.

At Can Dye Carpets, we specialize in stain removal, bleach spot repair, colour correction, and carpet colour restoration.

Before you replace your carpet — or make the damage worse — see if it can be professionally restored.

Permanent marker on carpet? Don’t panic — but act carefully.

Permanent marker stains can be tricky because the ink is designed to bond to surfaces. On carpet, the wrong cleaning method can spread the stain, push it deeper, or even damage the carpet colour.

Here’s what to do:

1. Blot first — never scrub.
Use a clean white towel to gently blot the stain. Scrubbing can spread the ink and damage the carpet fibres.

2. Test before applying anything.
Before using any cleaner, test it on a small hidden area to make sure it does not remove or change the carpet colour.

3. Use a small amount of rubbing alcohol.
Lightly dampen a white cloth with rubbing alcohol and gently blot the marker stain from the outside toward the centre. Do not pour it directly onto the carpet.

4. Rinse and blot dry.
After the ink starts lifting, blot the area with clean water to remove residue, then dry the area with a towel.

5. Know when to stop.
If the stain is spreading, fading the carpet, or not improving, stop and call a professional.

Permanent marker can often leave behind dye damage, especially on lighter carpets. At Can Dye Carpets, we specialize in stain removal, colour correction, and carpet colour restoration.

Before you replace the carpet, see if it can be restored.

Just in time for the new homeowners.

We recently completed a bleach spot repair for a home that had just been sold.

The homeowner had accidentally spilled paint on the carpet and tried to remove it using a rug cleaner. Unfortunately, the cleaning product caused colour loss and left behind a bleached-out area that stood out right before the new owners were moving in.

Instead of replacing the carpet, we were able to restore the damaged area by carefully colour matching the carpet and blending the repair into the surrounding fibres.

The result: the carpet was brought back to a clean, presentable condition just in time for possession day.

For homeowners, realtors, and property managers, this is a great reminder: not every carpet issue means replacement. Paint spills, bleach spots, chemical damage, and colour loss can often be professionally repaired.

Before you replace — see if it can be restored.
