I never would have believed one of my favorite sounds in the world would be Lucky Blue humming away in the driveway.

No screens. No alerts. No rush. Just the steady sound of an old truck still doing what it was built to do 75 years later.

Some people hear noise. I hear history, craftsmanship, and a whole lot of life left in her yet. 💙

Spring is in the air and Lucky Blue is officially waking up for the season.

Battery’s in. Fuel’s flowing. She fired right up and is ready for another summer of country cruising, sunset watching, photo shoots, weddings, and making memories.

There’s just something about an old truck in the springtime, windows down, warm air rolling in, gravel roads ahead, and nowhere particular to be.

This season already has a few special moments booked, including a wedding, and I can’t wait to see Lucky Blue become part of someone else’s story again.

Here’s to vintage rides, prairie skies, and a little slower pace this summer. 🌾💙

The hunt for old parts is like a treasure hunt!

The 1951 International Harvester L-Series trucks were fairly basic from the factory, and radios were actually considered more of an optional accessory than a standard feature. A lot of farm and work trucks never had one installed at all.

A few interesting things about them:

- Most original radios were dealer-installed rather than factory-installed.
- They were typically AM-only tube radios.
- The units were large, heavy, and mounted behind the dash with separate control k***s through the front panel.
- Many were produced by companies like Motorola, Delco, or Philco specifically for International trucks.
- The speaker was often mounted separately under the dash or behind a grille in the dash.

Visually, the radios usually had:

- ivory or cream push buttons
- chrome bezels
- round dual k***s for tuning and volume
- warm analog dial lighting that looks incredible at night in a restored cab

One of the quirks of early 1950s radios is that they used vacuum tubes and sometimes a vi****or power supply (yes, that was the actual term) to convert 6-volt truck power into higher voltage for the tubes. When restored properly, they have that warm humming sound and slow startup that people love in vintage vehicles.

Finding a radio for this truck too me a year of hunting and magically day, an eBay search turned up a search find that I could not believe. I brand new one preserved in the original box.

After paying the US exchange (ouch), this treasure arrived and when I installed it you would not have believed it never came with one. I am not sure I will restore it further to play right away. For now I will admire it and pretend it works with an iPhone playing in my pocket!

I am so glad the original plan didn’t work out!

The original hub caps had seen decades of life, scratches, wear, rust, stories. I went back and worth about restoring them or buying new ones. I convinced myself new ones would be easier, cleaner, cheaper. So I ordered new ones.

When they arrived I was so disappointed they didn’t fit right. I ended up reverting back to where I should have started to begin with, preserving as much of this original beauty as possible. Eight long weeks later, I finally picked them up this week. I am in love with how they turned out. Thanks Alberta Plating!

There’s something powerful about bringing old things back to life instead of replacing them. The imperfections, the history, the craftsmanship, you can’t recreate that with something brand new in a box.

Lucky Blue keeps teaching me the same lesson over and over: sometimes the best path forward isn’t starting over. It’s restoring what already has good bones and being patient.

Time to get these shiny new wheels turning!

Today was “interior exploration day” for Blue — and yes, we fully expected some surprises. We pulled the seat and the headliner out, convinced the mice would’ve made their home in the seat foam… but nope. To our shock, the headliner was the prime luxury mouse penthouse 🐭

I don’t know how they managed to squeeze their way up there — or carry half a field’s worth of bedding above their heads — but consider us humbled by mouse determination and interior design ambitions.

Everything is now cleaned, cleared, and put back together in time to prep for winter. Next up: sealing every sneaky little entry point, tucking Bounce sheets into every nook and cranny, and setting up a few mouse “no-thank-you” stations.

Hoping we get a few more sunny fall drives before it’s time to tuck Blue in for winter under the cover.

🍁 Fall Drives with Lucky Blue 🍁

We took a few fall drives this weekend to soak in the scenery, and there’s truly nothing more majestic than the golden glow and fiery beauty of this season. It was the first weekend we didn’t have to roll the windows down in the truck… soon we’ll be testing the heat in the cab instead!

I’ll miss these evening drives once Blue is parked for the winter. There’s something peaceful about cruising down quiet country roads, surrounded by colour and calm.

Next up for Lucky Blue — the interior! The fabric is officially on order and should arrive within a week. Then it’s time to pull out the headliner, side panels, and seat for a full refresh. I can only imagine what surprises we’ll find tucked inside that old seat.

Can’t wait to see (and smell) the transformation once Lucky Blue’s got a new upholstery look inside!

🍂 Harvest season is almost wrapped up!

It’s been a busy few weeks in the field, and the last week we got to head out to deliver a few harvest bags to friends and neighbors in Blue!

There’s still a bit left to gather before the frost rolls in — a few more rows of potatoes and carrots to dig, sunflowers to cut and dry for the chickens to enjoy, and maybe, just maybe, one of our pumpkins will turn orange before the first frost hits. 🎃

Here’s to the changing seasons, muddy boots, and one last round of harvest before the fields rest. 🌾 Spruce Lane Farm Co-op

Lucky Blue’s got a secret!

Something’s humming under the hood tonight — like she’s softly calling,
“Beep! Beep! An adventure’s on the way!”

As I sit behind the steering wheel, soaking in another summer sunset, I can’t help but anticipate the excitement waiting just over the horizon. Tomorrow this vintage beauty takes centre stage… and let’s just say lights, camera, action are rolling her way. (Fans of Little Blue Truck might feel right at home 😉)

“Beep! Beep!” said Little Blue.

Lucky Blue is ready to roll. 🛻✨

A dream day come true! 💙 Lucky Blue rolled into the annual Springbank Fall Fair loaded down with fresh Johnson Taber Corn & Potatoes. I swear the old truck even drove differently with the weight in the back—it felt like we were really on a mission.

Dozens of people stopped by throughout the day—some just to admire, many to ask about Lucky Blue’s story, and even more to share their own memories of vintage trucks from growing up on family farms. Those stories were the best part, little slices of history passed from one generation to another.

The highlight for me, though, was seeing the pure joy in kids’ eyes when they climbed into the cab for a picture. Their smiles lit up the day, and for a moment, it felt like Lucky Blue was theirs too.

Corn sold, stories shared, memories made. I loved it all.
